Pregnancy Calorie Needs
Estimate daily calories in pregnancy with trimester adjustments.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool adds a fixed trimester allowance to the daily calories you already need. total = baseline + extra, with extra equal to 0 kcal in the first trimester, 340 kcal in the second and 450 kcal in the third. The baseline is your daily energy need in kcal before pregnancy, which you must supply from another estimate or your own records. The allowance depends only on the trimester you choose, not on weight, height, activity or the number of babies. A trimester that is missing or not one of the three choices gives no result, and so does a baseline below 500 or above 10,000 kcal. Results are whole kcal. It is an estimate and does not replace advice from a midwife or doctor.
Worked example
A woman's baseline need is 2,000 kcal per day and she is in the third trimester. The extra allowance for that stage is 450 kcal. Add: 2,000 + 450 = 2,450 kcal per day, with 450 kcal shown as the added amount. In the first trimester the same baseline stays at 2,000 kcal because the extra is 0, and in the second trimester it becomes 2,340 kcal.
Common mistakes
- Entering the calories you currently eat instead of your baseline need. If you already eat extra, the added allowance is stacked on top and the total is too high.
- Not choosing a trimester. Without one the tool shows no result, so pick the stage you are in; the figure changes from +0 to +340 to +450 kcal.
- Thinking the extra is a flat "eating for two" figure. It is far below doubling your food: 450 kcal is roughly one snack and a light meal, not a second dinner.
- Entering kilojoules or a daily need below 500 kcal. The field is kcal, and values under 500 or over 10,000 are rejected, so a kJ figure such as 8,400 for 2,000 kcal would be accepted and give a total far too high.
- Applying the third-trimester extra from the start. The allowance rises by stage and is 0 in the first trimester.

About this calculator
Calorie needs in pregnancy build on your pre-pregnancy baseline in stages, not with a single flat number added from day one: most clinical guidelines (including those from ACOG and the Institute of Medicine) suggest no extra calories in the first trimester, roughly +340 kcal/day in the second trimester, and roughly +450 kcal/day in the third, reflecting the accelerating energy cost of fetal growth as pregnancy progresses.
These trimester-based additions matter because gaining too little or too much weight during pregnancy both carry documented risks — under-eating is linked to lower birth weight, while excess intake beyond these targets is associated with gestational diabetes and delivery complications — so obstetricians and dietitians use trimester-adjusted estimates rather than a single “eating for two” rule of thumb, which historically overshot actual needs by a wide margin.
Enter your baseline daily calories and current trimester, and this calculator adds the appropriate extra calories for that stage, giving you an estimated daily target. This tool is informational and does not replace guidance from your prenatal care provider.
