PPM to Ratio Calculator
Turn ppm into percent, a 1:N ratio and mg/L
Result
How it is calculated
You enter one number, the concentration in parts per million (ppm), which must be greater than zero. The tool gives three equivalents. Percent is ppm ÷ 10,000, shown with two decimals. The ratio is 1 : (1,000,000 ÷ ppm), with the second number rounded to a whole number. The mg/L figure is simply the ppm value repeated with two decimals. That last equality holds only for dilute water-based solutions, where one liter weighs about one kilogram; for oils, strong brines or gases it does not hold. Since the percent is rounded to two decimals, very small concentrations such as 3 ppm show as 0.00%, even though the ratio and mg/L still carry the information. Values above 1,000,000 ppm are accepted and give percentages over 100%, which is physically meaningless.
Worked example
A solution contains 250 ppm of a dissolved substance. Percent: 250 ÷ 10,000 = 0.025, which the tool rounds to 0.03%. Ratio: 1,000,000 ÷ 250 = 4,000, so the ratio is 1:4,000, meaning one part in 4,000 parts. In water, 250 ppm is 250.00 mg/L, or 250 mg of the substance in each liter.
Common mistakes
- Treating the rounded percent as exact. 250 ppm is 0.025%, but the display shows 0.03%; use the ppm or the ratio for precise work.
- Assuming ppm equals mg/L for any liquid. It does so only for dilute aqueous solutions; for other liquids you must correct for density.
- Mixing up ppm with ppb or percent. 1 ppm is 1,000 ppb and 0.0001%, so a 1% solution is 10,000 ppm, not 100.
- Reading 1:4,000 as 1 part to 4,000 parts of the other component. In this ratio the 4,000 is the total, so the other component is 3,999 parts.
- Entering 0 or a negative number. The tool needs a positive concentration and returns nothing otherwise.
About this calculator
Parts per million is a dimensionless concentration unit that this calculator converts three ways: to percent by dividing by 10,000 (since 1% = 10,000 ppm), to a 1:N ratio where N = 1,000,000 / ppm, and to milligrams per liter, which for dilute aqueous solutions is numerically equal to ppm because water's density is close to 1 kg/L.
Environmental scientists and water treatment operators work in ppm and mg/L interchangeably when reporting contaminant or chlorine concentrations, agricultural technicians use ppm to mix fertilizer and pesticide solutions to label-specified strengths, and chemists convert between these units constantly since lab instruments, safety data sheets and regulatory limits each tend to favor a different one.

The mg/L line equals the ppm value only for dilute water-based solutions, where density is about 1 kg per litre. For oils, brines or gases the two diverge. As an example, 500 ppm is 0.05 percent, or 1 part in 2,000. Which kind of mixture are you converting, a pool chemical, a fertiliser or something else?
