Potential Energy Calculator
Find an object’s potential energy.

How it is calculated
Gravitational potential energy near the Earth's surface is PE = m × g × h, where m is the mass in kilograms, g is the gravitational acceleration and h is the height in metres above the level you choose as zero. The tool fixes g at 9.81 m/s², so the answer is in joules (J). Height is measured from your own reference point, so a negative height gives a negative energy, meaning the object sits below that reference. Mass cannot be negative. The result is rounded to two decimals. This is the constant-gravity form only; it is not accurate for very large heights where g changes noticeably.
Worked example
A 12 kg box is lifted 5 m above the floor. Step 1: weight force = 12 × 9.81 = 117.72 N. Step 2: multiply by the height: 117.72 × 5 = 588.6. The tool shows 588.60 J. If the box falls back to the floor, this is the energy that can be converted into motion, ignoring air resistance.
Common mistakes
- Entering mass in grams or pounds. The formula expects kilograms; 500 g must be written as 0.5.
- Entering height in centimetres or feet. It must be metres, otherwise the joules are off by a factor of 100 or about 3.28.
- Measuring height from the wrong zero. Only the difference from your reference level matters, so choose it deliberately (floor, table, ground).
- Using the length of a ramp instead of the vertical rise. Only the vertical height counts, not the distance travelled along a slope.
- Confusing joules with kilojoules or watts. The answer is energy in J, not power.
About this calculator
This calculator finds gravitational potential energy using PE = mgh — mass times gravitational acceleration (9.8 m/s² on Earth) times height above a reference point — the energy an object has stored purely because of its position in a gravitational field.
Physics students use it to solve energy-conservation problems where potential energy converts into kinetic energy (a ball dropped from a height, a roller coaster at its peak), and engineers use the same formula to estimate the energy stored in elevated water for hydroelectric plants or the energy a falling object could release in a safety analysis.

Only the difference in height matters, so choose any convenient zero level, such as the floor or the table, and measure from there. The tool uses g = 9.81 m/s2, with mass in kilograms, height in metres and the answer in joules, and a point below your zero level gives a negative value. A quick check: lifting 1 kg by 1 m stores about 9.81 J. What situation are you working through?
