Plate Method Portion Calculator
Build a balanced plate: half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs.

How it is calculated
The tool turns plate geometry into a rough portion plan. Only the inner 80% of the plate diameter is treated as food area: area = π × (0.8 × diameter ÷ 2)2, leaving the rim empty. The area is split half to vegetables, a quarter to protein and a quarter to carbohydrate. Each section's volume is its area times the serving depth you enter (all in cm). Weight uses fixed cooked-food densities of 0.55 g/cm3 for vegetables, 1.05 for protein and 0.75 for carbohydrate. Calories use 0.35, 1.8 and 1.4 kcal per gram. The plate diameter must be 10 to 45 cm and each depth above 0 and at most 10 cm. The densities are typical values; real food varies, so treat the grams and calories as estimates.
Worked example
A 26 cm plate. The food area uses a radius of 26 × 0.8 ÷ 2 = 10.4 cm, so the area is π × 10.42 ≈ 340 cm2. The heaps are 2.5 cm for vegetables and 1.5 cm for both protein and carbohydrate. Vegetables: 340 × 0.50 × 2.5 × 0.55 = 234 g. Protein: 340 × 0.25 × 1.5 × 1.05 = 134 g. Carbohydrate: 340 × 0.25 × 1.5 × 0.75 = 96 g. Calories: 234 × 0.35 + 134 × 1.8 + 96 × 1.4 ≈ 456 kcal, shown as "456 kcal".
Common mistakes
- Entering the plate size in inches: the tool expects cm, and a 10-inch plate typed as 10 gives a tiny 50 cm2 food area.
- Entering the whole plate's weight or calories in the depth fields: they ask for the thickness of each food layer in cm, not a weight.
- Using the same depth for every section: vegetables are usually piled higher than rice or meat, so equal depths push vegetables below the half-plate rule by weight.
- Expecting a calorie target: the tool has no calorie input; it reports the calories your plate geometry implies.
- Entering an unrealistic pile, such as 10 cm on a 10 cm plate: the tool accepts it and gives a plausible-looking total.

About this calculator
The plate method is a visual portion-control system popularized by diabetes educators and dietitians (notably the American Diabetes Association's "Create Your Plate") that replaces gram-by-gram counting with simple proportions: fill half a standard dinner plate with non-starchy vegetables, one quarter with a lean protein, and one quarter with a carbohydrate or starch. It works because it controls calorie density and carbohydrate load without requiring a food scale or a nutrition app at every meal.
Dietitians, diabetes educators and people managing weight or blood sugar use the plate method as an easier alternative to macro tracking, especially for clients who find calorie counting unsustainable or who eat out often and need a rule of thumb that travels. Because "half a plate" means very different gram amounts depending on plate size and how deep you pile each food, converting the proportions into actual grams and calories makes the method concrete enough to shop and cook from.
