Percentile Rank Calculator
Find a score's percentile rank.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses the simple counting definition: PR = (number of values below the score ÷ total number of values) × 100. Enter how many scores in the group are strictly lower than yours, and how many scores there are in total including yours. The total must be above zero and the count below it cannot be negative or larger than the total. The result is a percentage with two decimals. Ties are not given half credit here, so a score equal to others is not counted above them. It is a rank within that group, not a percentage of correct answers.
Worked example
A student scores higher than 42 of the 50 students who took a test. Divide the count below by the total: 42 ÷ 50 = 0.84. Multiply by 100 to get 84.00%. The percentile rank is 84.00%, meaning the student did better than 84% of the group.
Common mistakes
- Counting the people at or above your score as "below". Only scores strictly lower than yours go in the first field.
- Confusing percentile with percentage. A percentile rank of 84% means you outscored 84% of the group, not that you answered 84% of questions correctly.
- Leaving yourself out of the total. The total is the whole group, including your own score.
- Entering a percentage in the first field instead of a head count. It expects a number of values, not a percent.
About this calculator
This calculator finds a score's percentile rank using the direct empirical formula PR = (number of values below the score ÷ total number of values) × 100, with no half-credit for values tied with the score. This differs from a z-score-based percentile: it works directly from an actual dataset's ranking, with no assumption that the data follows a normal distribution, making it the more appropriate method whenever the underlying distribution is unknown or skewed.
Teachers and test administrators use it to interpret how a student's score compares to the rest of a class or cohort, HR professionals use it to benchmark a salary or performance score against a comparison group, sports analysts use it to rank an athlete's statistic within a league, and researchers use it whenever they need a distribution-free way to express relative standing.

Ties are where this definition surprises people. A score equal to others counts only the values strictly below it, so a group of identical scores all get 0 percent. If you prefer the mid-rank convention, add half the number of tied scores, excluding yours, to the count below before entering it. The total should still include your own score. How many tied scores are in your dataset?
