Palindrome Checker
Test if a word or phrase is a palindrome.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool first normalises your text: every character that is not a letter or a digit (spaces, commas, colons, hyphens, apostrophes) is removed and the rest is lower-cased. It then builds the reversed version of that cleaned string and compares the two with clean == reverse(clean). If they are identical you get a check mark, otherwise a cross. Digits count as characters, so 12321 is a palindrome, and letters from any alphabet are handled. An input that becomes empty after cleaning (for example only punctuation) is never reported as a palindrome. Capitals in every alphabet are folded to lower case, and the Turkish İ, I, ı and i all count as the same letter.
Worked example
Take A man, a plan, a canal: Panama. After removing spaces, the comma and the colon and lower-casing, the cleaned string is amanaplanacanalpanama, 21 characters long. Reading it from the last character to the first gives amanaplanacanalpanama again, so the two strings match and the tool shows ✓. Change one letter, for instance Panama to Panamo, and the reversed string no longer equals the cleaned one, so the answer becomes ✗.
Common mistakes
- Expecting punctuation or spacing to matter: Was it a car or a cat I saw? passes because only letters and digits are compared.
- Assuming accented letters match their plain versions:
éandeare different characters here (only the case is ignored, soÉmatchesé), so such phrases may fail. - Typing the phrase with a stray character, such as an extra letter or a typo, which breaks the symmetry.
- Testing word-by-word palindromes (the sentence reads the same word order reversed) rather than letter-by-letter ones; this tool compares characters only.
About this calculator
This tool checks whether a word or phrase reads identically forwards and backwards after being normalized — it strips spaces, punctuation, and letter case before comparing the string to its reverse, so phrases like "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama" are correctly recognized as palindromes even though the raw text isn't symmetric.
It's a favorite for word-game players hunting for palindromic answers, students learning basic string-processing logic, and programmers who want a quick reference result to check their own palindrome-detection code against.

The checker keeps letters and digits and drops everything else, so it works on numbers and dates too: 02/02/2020 becomes 02022020 and reads the same both ways. That also means a phrase that fails may only be failing because of a stray letter, so look at the cleaned text, not just the original wording.
