OSB Sheathing Calculator
Enter your wall and roof area to find the number of OSB sheets needed.

How it is calculated
Areas are in square feet and each 4×8 ft sheet counts as 32 sq ft. The tool adds wall and roof area, applies the waste allowance and rounds up to whole sheets: sheets = ceil((wall + roof) × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ 32). It also shows the area including waste and the sheet count with no waste at all. A blank wall or roof field counts as 0, but at least one area must be above zero. A blank waste field uses 10%; a negative waste gives no result. Enter net area to be covered (the tool does not subtract windows or doors itself), and note that other sheet sizes or metric 1.22 × 2.44 m panels are not handled.
Worked example
Walls 1,200 sq ft and roof 1,500 sq ft with 10% waste. Total area: 1,200 + 1,500 = 2,700 sq ft. With waste: 2,700 × 1.10 = 2,970 sq ft. Sheets: 2,970 ÷ 32 = 92.8, rounded up to 93 sheets. With no waste allowance, 2,700 ÷ 32 = 84.4 would round up to 85 sheets, so the allowance adds 8 sheets.
Common mistakes
- Entering square metres; the tool works in square feet and a 4×8 ft sheet, so convert m² first (1 m² is about 10.76 sq ft).
- Entering the wall length or the roof footprint rather than the actual sloped roof surface, which is larger than the floor plan beneath it.
- Entering the waste as a fraction (0.1); the field takes percent, so 10 means 10%.
- Subtracting window and door openings and also adding a large waste percentage, or leaving openings in while using 0% waste, so the order is short or over.
- Rounding the sheet count down; a partial sheet still has to be bought, and the tool always rounds up.
About this calculator
Oriented strand board (OSB) sheathing comes in a standard 4×8 foot panel — 32 square feet of coverage per sheet — used per APA (The Engineered Wood Association) and IRC building-code guidance to sheathe exterior walls and roof decks in wood-frame construction. The base material need is simply total area ÷ 32, rounded up to whole sheets.
Real jobs need more than that raw count because of window and door cutouts, roof hips and valleys, and offcuts that can't be reused on the next section, so builders typically add a 10–15% waste allowance on top of the base calculation — the same margin lumber yards and framing crews use when ordering material for a job so they aren't caught short mid-build.

For the roof, enter the sloped surface rather than the footprint. A quick conversion from pitch: a 6-in-12 roof has a slope factor of about 1.118, so 800 sq ft of footprint becomes roughly 894 sq ft of decking. Gable-end triangles belong in the wall figure. Tell us which panel sizes, such as 4 by 9 or 4 by 10 feet, you would like the tool to support.
