How it is calculated
The tool finds the sales volume at which total contribution equals fixed costs. contribution per unit = price − variable cost, break-even units = fixed costs / contribution per unit, break-even revenue = units × price and contribution margin ratio = contribution / price × 100. fixed is the total fixed cost for the period (rent, salaries), price and varcost are per unit. Units are shown with two decimals, money in USD, and the ratio as a percentage. If the price does not exceed the variable cost, the contribution is zero or negative, there is no break-even and the tool returns nothing. The units figure is not rounded up, so in practice you need to sell the next whole unit. It assumes a single product and constant price and costs.
Worked example
Fixed costs are 48000 per year, the product sells for 25 and costs 10 to make. Contribution per unit: 25 − 10 = $15.00. Break-even units: 48000 / 15 = 3,200.00 units. Break-even revenue: 3200 × 25 = $80,000.00. Contribution margin ratio: 15 / 25 = 60.00%. Every unit sold beyond 3,200 adds $15 of profit.
Common mistakes
- Putting a cost per unit into the fixed-costs field, or total variable costs into the per-unit field. Fixed is a total for the period, variable cost is per unit.
- Treating semi-variable costs such as a salary with commission as purely fixed or purely variable, which shifts the break-even point.
- Entering a price below the variable cost and expecting a loss figure. The tool returns no result because no volume ever breaks even.
- Forgetting that fixed costs are for the same period as the volume you plan. Annual fixed costs give annual break-even units, not monthly ones.
- Reading 2,777.78 units as achievable. Round up to a whole unit, and remember that break-even is only zero profit, not a target.

About this calculator
Break-even units are fixed costs ÷ (unit price − variable cost per unit), where the denominator is the contribution margin per unit — the amount each sale contributes toward covering fixed costs after variable costs are paid. Break-even revenue is simply break-even units × unit price.
Business owners, financial analysts, and startup founders use this to find the minimum sales volume needed to cover fixed costs like rent, salaries, and equipment before turning a profit, and to see how sensitive that break-even point is to pricing changes — a business with high fixed costs and thin per-unit margins needs a much larger volume swing to break even than one with low fixed costs and fat margins.

The tool finds only the zero-profit point, but you can plan for a profit target with the same inputs. Add the profit you want to the fixed costs. With 50,000 fixed, a price of 100 and a unit cost of 60, break-even is 1,250 units, while a 20,000 profit target needs 70,000 divided by 40, or 1,750 units. What profit target are you planning around?
