Net Carbs from Label Calculator
Enter the total carbs, fiber, and sugar alcohols from a food label to get net carbs.
Result
How it is calculated
Take the values from the label in grams per serving: net carbs = total carbs − fiber − (sugar alcohols ÷ 2). The tool deducts all of the fiber and exactly half of the sugar alcohols, one rule for every type. Total carbs and fiber are required; the sugar alcohol box is optional and an empty one counts as 0. Because fiber and sugar alcohols are parts of the total on a label, a fiber or sugar alcohol figure larger than the total carbs, or any negative value, shows no result. If the two deductions together exceed the total, the net is shown as 0.00 g. Net carbs is a community convention, not a regulated label term, and sugar alcohols are absorbed differently from one another, so the half rule is an estimate.
Worked example
A bar lists 22 g total carbohydrate, 9 g fiber and 7 g sugar alcohols per serving. Fiber deducted = 9.00 g. Sugar alcohols deducted = 7 ÷ 2 = 3.50 g. Net carbs = 22 − 9 − 3.5 = 9.50 g per serving. Eating two servings would count as 19 g net, not 9.5 g, so multiply by the portion you actually eat.
Common mistakes
- Entering values from the 100 g column when you eat a different portion, or mixing a per-100 g total with per-serving fiber. All three numbers must come from the same column.
- Expecting every sugar alcohol to be removed in full. Here exactly half is deducted, so the result is higher than a calculation that subtracts them all.
- Entering a fiber figure larger than the total carbs by mistake, for example 25 g fiber against 22 g total. The tool refuses it and shows nothing, so check the label again.
- Entering the grams of sugar alcohols after they have already been halved. The tool halves them itself, so enter the label figure.
- Logging the net figure in a tracker that counts total carbs, or reading it as an exact blood sugar effect. Individual response to sugar alcohols and fiber varies.

About this calculator
Net carbs is a widely used low-carb and keto community concept, commonly calculated as total carbohydrates minus fiber minus sugar alcohols. Because some sugar alcohols such as maltitol are only partially absorbed, many people subtract just half of the sugar alcohols, and that is what this calculator does. The idea is that fiber and most sugar alcohols have minimal impact on blood glucose and insulin response compared to digestible carbohydrates.
People following ketogenic or low-carb diets track net carbs rather than total carbs because it more closely reflects the carbohydrate load that actually affects blood sugar and can kick someone out of ketosis, and many low-carb packaged foods advertise their 'net carbs' prominently on the label for exactly this reason. It's worth noting net carbs is a community convention, not an FDA-regulated label term in the US, and sugar alcohol absorption varies by type, so the calculation is a useful estimate rather than an exact physiological measure.
This calculator takes the total carbs, fiber, and sugar alcohols listed on a nutrition label (sugar alcohols are optional), subtracts all of the fiber and half of the sugar alcohols, and returns the net carb count, so you can track your actual carb intake against a keto or low-carb daily target. Fiber and sugar alcohols cannot be larger than the total carbs, since they are part of it on the label.
