Neck-to-Height Ratio Calculator
Enter neck circumference and height to find your neck-to-height ratio.

How it is calculated
ratio (%) = neck circumference ÷ height × 100. Both measurements must be above zero and in the same unit; the result display labels them as cm, but because the units cancel out, inches in both fields give the same percentage. The ratio is rounded to two decimals and placed in one of three bands used by the tool: under 19% reads as low, 19% up to (not including) 23% as average, and 23% or more as high. These cut-offs are the tool's own rough bands, not a clinical standard, and they do not vary by sex or age. It is not a medical measure.
Worked example
Neck circumference 38 cm and height 175 cm. Divide: 38 ÷ 175 = 0.2171. Multiply by 100: 21.71%. That lies between 19 and 23, so the tool's note reads "Average ratio for most adults." A 41 cm neck at the same height would give 23.43% and fall in the high band.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units: neck in inches (15) with height in centimetres (175) gives 8.57%, far below any real ratio.
- Measuring the neck at the wrong place or pulling the tape tight. Measure just below the larynx, tape level and snug but not compressing the skin.
- Entering height in metres (1.75) with the neck in centimetres; the ratio would be 2,171%.
- Reading the band as a diagnosis of body fat. The note itself says it is not a clinical measure, and muscular necks can raise the ratio without extra fat.
- Comparing your ratio with other formulas for neck-to-height that use different cut-offs, or with a ratio calculated using a different body measure such as waist.

About this calculator
Neck-to-height ratio simply divides neck circumference by height and expresses it as a percentage, offering a single-tape-measure alternative to full body-composition testing. It builds on the same logic as neck-circumference screening used in sleep-medicine questionnaires (like the Berlin and STOP-Bang tools, where a neck over roughly 40 cm/17 in flags higher obstructive sleep apnea risk), since upper-body fat tends to collect around the neck as well as the abdomen.
Because the ratio scales neck size to a person's height rather than using a fixed cutoff, it is sometimes used informally as a quick proxy for central adiposity or general body composition trends over time. It is not a diagnostic tool and doesn't replace BMI, waist-to-height ratio or clinical body-fat measurement — it is best read as one more simple, low-cost signal alongside those other measures. A 2016 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine used a neck-to-height ratio above 0.25 (25%) as its marker of higher sleep-apnoea risk; the tool's three bands (under 19%, 19–23%, 23% and above) are its own rough guide, not taken from that study.

The ratio moves faster than you might expect: on a 175 cm frame, one extra centimetre of neck adds about 0.57 points, so 38 cm gives 21.71% and 39 cm gives 22.29%. Measure at the same spot each time, just below the larynx with the tape level, and keep the same posture. If your result lands near the 19% or 23% band edges, post your two measurements and how you took them.
