m/s to km/h Converter

Enter a speed and pick a direction to convert between m/s and km/h.

How it is calculated

Both directions use the exact factor 3.6, which comes from 1 m/s = 3600 m per hour = 3.6 km per hour. Metres per second to kilometres per hour: km/h = m/s × 3.6. The other way: m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6. The converted value is rounded to two decimals, and a second line converts the result back to the original unit as a check. Because of the two-decimal rounding, very small speeds can show as 0.00 (0.01 km/h appears as 0.00 m/s), so for tiny values use a larger unit or scale the figure up. Negative speeds are converted like positive ones, with the sign kept. If the direction is not recognised, the tool converts from m/s to km/h.

Worked example

Convert 100 km/h to metres per second. Divide by the factor: 100 ÷ 3.6 = 27.7778 m/s. The tool rounds this to two decimals, so the result is 27.78 m/s. The check line converts the unrounded value back and shows 100.00 km/h, which confirms the conversion.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying instead of dividing when going from km/h to m/s. A speed in m/s is always the smaller number: 100 km/h is about 27.78 m/s, not 360.
  • Choosing the wrong direction setting. The same number gives 3.6 times too large or too small a result, for example 10 gives 36.00 km/h in one direction and 2.78 m/s in the other.
  • Rounding 3.6 to 4 or the reverse factor to 0.3 for mental checks and then comparing with the tool. The exact factor is 3.6 (or 0.27778 for the reverse), so using 4 or 0.3 is off by roughly 8 to 11 percent.
  • Entering a speed already in km/s or miles per hour. The tool only knows m/s and km/h; other units must be converted first.
  • Expecting more than two decimals. Tiny values like 0.01 km/h show as 0.00 m/s because the output is rounded to two places.

About this calculator

Metres per second and kilometres per hour are the two most common units for expressing speed in the metric world, and converting between them is a fixed multiplication: since there are 1000 metres in a kilometre and 3600 seconds in an hour, 1 m/s equals exactly 3.6 km/h.

This calculator converts a speed value in either direction using that factor. It comes up constantly in physics coursework when working with velocity formulas defined in SI units (m/s) but reported in the everyday unit (km/h), and in sports and athletics — sprint times, cycling speeds and wind readings are commonly measured in m/s but discussed in km/h — as well as in general science and engineering contexts where units need to match before a calculation can proceed.

There is an exact shortcut for checking the result in your head: going from m/s to km/h, multiply by 4 and then take off 10 percent. For 15 m/s that is 60 minus 6, or 54 km/h. In the other direction, divide by 4 and add back a ninth of the quarter, or simply divide by 3.6 with the tool. It is handy when a wind or speed figure arrives in one unit. Where do you most often meet m/s?
