Moving Cost Calculator

Get a quick estimate of what your move will cost from start to finish.

How it is calculated

The total is the sum of three parts: transport = miles × (pounds ÷ 100) × 0.50, labor = labor hours × 45, and the packing fee you type in as a flat dollar amount. So transport is priced at a fixed illustrative 0.50 dollars per mile per 100 lb, and labor at a fixed 45 dollars per hour; neither rate can be changed in the form. Distance is in miles, weight in pounds, labor in hours, and all results are in US dollars. The weight must be above zero, while distance, hours and packing cost may be zero. Real quotes depend on the carrier, season, stairs, insurance and local tariffs, so treat the figure as a planning estimate, not a bid.

Worked example

A 250-mile move with 3,000 lb of belongings, 6 labor hours and a 300 dollar packing fee. Transport: 250 × (3,000 ÷ 100) × 0.50 = 250 × 30 × 0.50 = $3,750.00. Labor: 6 × 45 = $270.00. Packing: $300. Total: 3,750 + 270 + 300 = $4,320.00.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the packing field empty when no packing is wanted; the tool returns no result unless you enter 0.
  • Entering weight in kilograms or distance in kilometres; both fields are pounds and miles.
  • Entering the volume in cubic feet in the weight field, which understates the transport cost badly.
  • Treating the total as a binding quote: it leaves out fuel surcharges, insurance, tolls and storage, and the rates are fixed illustrative values.

About this calculator

The total cost of a household move is driven primarily by distance, the weight (or volume) of the shipment, the labor hours required to load and unload, and optional services like professional packing — factors that professional moving companies use as the core inputs for their own binding and non-binding estimates. Long-distance movers in the US typically price by weight and distance under federal (FMCSA) tariff rules, while local moves are usually billed hourly based on crew size and hours worked.

Households planning a relocation use cost estimates like this to budget ahead of time and to compare a DIY move (renting a truck and doing labor themselves) against hiring full-service movers, since packing services alone can add a substantial percentage to the total bill but save significant time and reduce damage risk for fragile or bulky items.

This calculator estimates your total moving cost from distance, shipment weight, labor hours, and any packing service fees, giving you a realistic budget for planning your move from start to finish.
