Microns (µm) to Millimetres Converter

Enter a value in microns (µm) to convert it to millimetres, metres.

How it is calculated

A micron (µm) is a millionth of a metre and a millimetre is a thousandth of a metre, so one millimetre holds 1,000 microns. The tool applies mm = µm × 0.001 and m = µm × 0.000001. The millimetre value is rounded to 4 decimals, while the metre value is written in scientific notation with 4 decimals (for example 2.5000 × 10⁻⁵ m, which is 0.000025 m). Because the millimetre output stops at four decimals, very small inputs, below about 0.05 µm, show as 0.0000 mm; use the metre output for those. Zero and negative values are accepted and simply scaled.

Worked example

A foil is 25 µm thick. Millimetres: 25 × 0.001 = 0.0250 mm. Metres: 25 × 0.000001 = 0.000025, which the tool writes as 2.5000 × 10⁻⁵ m. As a check, 0.025 mm is 25 thousandths of a millimetre, the same as 25 microns.

Common mistakes

  • Shifting the decimal point the wrong way. To go from µm to mm divide by 1,000, so 25 µm is 0.025 mm and not 25,000 mm.
  • Confusing microns (µm) with millimetres or with nanometres. 1 µm is 1,000 nm, and 1 mm is 1,000 µm.
  • Reading 2.5000 × 10⁻⁵ m as 2.5 m. The × 10⁻⁵ part moves the decimal point five places left, so it is 0.000025 m.
  • Reading 0.0000 mm as zero for a tiny value. The millimetre output is rounded to four decimals; a 0.00004 µm input appears as 0.0000 mm but 4.0000 × 10⁻¹¹ m.

About this calculator

A micron (µm), formally the micrometre, is one-millionth of a metre, so the conversion is a clean decimal shift: 1 µm = 0.001 mm = 0.000001 m. It sits at the scale of a human hair (roughly 70 µm across) and typical bacteria (1-10 µm).

Manufacturing and machining engineers specify tolerances and surface finish in microns, semiconductor and thin-film processes measure layer thickness in microns or nanometres, and clinicians describe cell sizes at the same scale — so converting to millimetres or metres is routine when comparing a micron spec against a caliper or drawing dimensioned in mm.

Micron figures show up on filter ratings and coating thicknesses, and 1000 µm is exactly 1 mm, so a 100 micron filter has openings of about 0.1 mm. Remember that a nominal rating is an average claim: larger particles can still pass through. For safety-critical filtering, check the supplier's absolute rating. What are you sizing, a filter or a coating?
