Microclover Seed Calculator

Enter your lawn area to size up the microclover seed needed.

How it is calculated

The seed quantity is a straight multiplication: seed (g) = area (m²) × rate (g/m²). The result is then shown in three units: grams, kilograms (g ÷ 1000) and pounds (g ÷ 453.59237). Area must be entered in square metres, and the rate in grams per square metre. If you leave the rate empty the tool assumes 2 g/m²; a rate or area of zero or less gives no result. Grams are rounded to a whole number, kilograms to three decimals and pounds to two. The tool does not add any allowance for waste, bare patches or uneven spreading, so round the figure up a little when buying.

Worked example

A lawn measures 150 m² and you want to overseed at 3 g/m². Seed needed: 150 × 3 = 450 g. In kilograms that is 450 ÷ 1000 = 0.450 kg, and in pounds 450 ÷ 453.59237 = 0.99 lb. The tool therefore shows 450 g, 0.450 kg and 0.99 lb. If you left the rate empty, the same lawn would be calculated at 2 g/m², giving 300 g.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the area in square feet or square yards; the field expects square metres, so a 1,600 sq ft lawn is about 149 m², not 1,600.
  • Entering the rate in kilograms or pounds per hectare or acre; it must be grams per square metre, otherwise the answer is off by a large factor.
  • Leaving the rate blank and assuming it reads your seed packet; the tool silently uses 2 g/m², which may differ from the supplier's overseeding rate.
  • Including paths, flower beds and the house footprint in the area; only the grassed area that will be overseeded counts.
  • Buying exactly the calculated amount; there is no spread loss allowance, so a bare-bones figure can leave the last corner thin.

About this calculator

Microclover (a dwarf white clover cultivar) is typically overseeded into an existing lawn rather than planted alone, at a much lighter rate than a pure clover lawn — commonly around 2 to 5 grams per square meter when blended into grass, versus far higher rates for a solid clover stand. Seeding rate scales directly with area, so total seed needed is simply area × chosen rate per unit area.

This calculator takes your lawn's area and your target overseeding rate and returns the total amount of microclover seed to buy. Homeowners use it when adding clover to reduce fertilizer needs and boost drought tolerance in an existing lawn, and landscapers and lawn-care contractors use it to quote seed quantities accurately for eco-lawn conversion jobs.

The number is the seed for the bare area you enter, with no allowance for patchy germination or spillage. If your lawn is measured in square feet, multiply by 0.0929 to get square metres first. For scale, a full hectare (10,000 square metres) at the default 2 g per square metre comes to 20 kg. Check the rate printed on your seed supplier's label before relying on the default. What rate does your seed packet recommend?
