MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration) Calculator
Get MCHC from your hemoglobin and hematocrit.

How it is calculated
MCHC divides the hemoglobin in a blood sample by the share of the sample taken up by red cells. MCHC = Hb / Hct × 100. Hb is hemoglobin in g/dL and Hct is hematocrit in percent, for example 42 for 42%. The result is in g/dL and is shown with one decimal. The tool only accepts hemoglobin above 0 and up to 40 g/dL and hematocrit from 10 to 70 percent; a value outside those ranges, or an empty field, shows no result. That catches a hemoglobin typed in g/L or a hematocrit typed as a fraction, but each field is checked separately, so a pair that is in range yet physiologically odd (14.2 with 10) still gives a number. It reports only the number and does not label it as low, normal or high.
Worked example
A blood count lists hemoglobin 14.2 g/dL and hematocrit 42%. Divide hemoglobin by hematocrit: 14.2 / 42 = 0.3381. Multiply by 100 and round to one decimal to get an MCHC of 33.8 g/dL. This tells you that the red cells in the sample carry 33.8 grams of hemoglobin per 100 millilitres of packed cells. Whether that value is normal depends on the laboratory's reference range printed on your report.
Common mistakes
- Entering hematocrit as a fraction (0.42). The field is percent, and a value below 10 shows no result.
- Entering hemoglobin in g/L (142) instead of g/dL (14.2). Anything above 40 shows no result, so convert to g/dL first.
- Swapping the two fields. Typing 42 as hemoglobin and 14.2 as hematocrit is out of range for both, so no result appears.
- Confusing MCHC with MCH. MCHC is hemoglobin concentration in a volume of red cells, whereas MCH is hemoglobin weight in a single cell, and the two numbers are not interchangeable.
- Interpreting one result alone. The tool gives no reference range, so compare it with the one on your lab report and discuss any flag with a clinician.

About this calculator
MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration) is a standard red-blood-cell index reported on a complete blood count (CBC), measuring the average concentration of hemoglobin inside a given volume of packed red cells. It's calculated as MCHC = (hemoglobin / hematocrit) × 100, expressed in grams per deciliter, and describes how densely each red cell is packed with the oxygen-carrying protein hemoglobin.
Clinicians use MCHC alongside MCV (mean corpuscular volume) and MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) to classify anemia: a low MCHC (hypochromic) often points toward iron-deficiency anemia or thalassemia, while a high MCHC (hyperchromic) can suggest hereditary spherocytosis or certain lab artifacts.
