How it is calculated

The generator builds placeholder text in the style of the classic Lorem Ipsum passage. You choose the number of paragraphs, from 1 to 20 (values outside that range are clamped, and an empty field gives 3). Each paragraph has 3 to 5 sentences and each sentence has 8 to 14 words drawn at random from a pool of 47 Latin-looking words, with the first letter capitalised and a full stop at the end. The very first sentence is always the traditional opening line, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The rest is random, so every click gives different text. The words are not meaningful Latin and are only meant to fill layouts.

Worked example

Ask for 2 paragraphs. The first paragraph starts with the fixed sentence Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit., followed by 2 to 4 random sentences of 8 to 14 words each. The second paragraph is made of 3 to 5 random sentences. So the output is 2 paragraphs, separated by a blank line, with roughly 50 to 130 words in total. Asking again produces a different text with the same structure.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the same text on every run; apart from the first sentence it is random, so save the text you like.
  • Entering a large count such as 100 and expecting 100 paragraphs; the limit is 20.
  • Leaving placeholder text on a live page, where it can be indexed and look unfinished.
  • Using it to judge how a design looks in another language; Latin-style words do not have the lengths or characters of the real content.
  • Typing a word count instead of a paragraph count; the field counts paragraphs.

Each paragraph here has three to five sentences of similar length and draws on only 47 words, so test your layout with a very long headline, a one-line paragraph and a wall of text as well.
