Light-Year Distance Calculator
Convert light-years to other distance units.
Result
How it is calculated
You enter a distance in light-years and the tool multiplies or divides it by fixed constants: km = ly × 9.4607304725808 × 1012, AU = ly × 63,241.077 and parsecs = ly ÷ 3.2615638. Kilometres are rounded to a whole number, AU to two decimals and parsecs to four.
The conversion goes in one direction only, from light-years to the other three units. To go from parsecs or kilometres back to light-years, use the figures above in reverse. Negative distances give no result, and zero returns zeros. Very large values produce very long kilometre figures, so count the digits carefully when copying them. The constants are exact for the standard Julian light-year, not for the distance light covers in a calendar year.
Worked example
Convert 4.24 light-years.
Kilometres: 4.24 × 9.4607304725808 × 1012 ≈ 40,113,497,203,743 km. Astronomical units: 4.24 × 63,241.077 = 268,142.17 AU. Parsecs: 4.24 ÷ 3.2615638 = 1.3000 pc. So the distance is about 40 trillion kilometres, or roughly 268 thousand times the Earth–Sun distance.
Common mistakes
- Treating a light-year as a unit of time. It measures distance: the path light covers in one year.
- Confusing light-years with parsecs. One parsec is about 3.26 light-years, so a catalogue distance in pc must be multiplied by 3.2616 before using this field.
- Entering a distance already in light-years from a source that uses thousands or millions of light-years, without scaling it. 2 kly must be typed as 2000.
- Reading the AU figure as a travel estimate. It is only the distance expressed in Earth–Sun units and says nothing about how long a trip would take.
- Dropping digits when copying the long kilometre result, which changes the magnitude by a factor of ten.

About this calculator
A light-year is the distance light travels in one Julian year — about 9.461 trillion kilometers — and this calculator converts that unit into kilometers, astronomical units (AU, the Earth–Sun distance of ~149.6 million km), and parsecs (about 3.26 light-years, defined from stellar parallax). Because interstellar and intergalactic distances are far too large for kilometers to be practical, astronomers rely on light-years and parsecs as their working units.
Astronomers and astrophysicists use these conversions when comparing catalog distances given in different units, science communicators and planetarium educators use them to translate raw star-catalog data into numbers a general audience can grasp, and astronomy students use them to build intuition for the true scale of space. Sci-fi fans checking how far a fictional starship's journey would really be, and anyone curious how far the nearest star or galaxy actually is, use this tool as well.

A quick sense check: a light-year is close to 63,241 astronomical units and a parsec is about 3,26 light-years, so a result in parsecs should be roughly a third of the input. The tool converts in one direction only, from light-years outward. It does not account for the fact that light travel distance and present distance differ for far-away galaxies. What distance are you trying to picture?
