Lifestyle Inflation Calculator
Find out where lifestyle creep takes your spending.

How it is calculated
The tool compounds your yearly spending at a fixed growth rate: future spending = current × (1 + rate ÷ 100)years and extra per year = future spending − current. Current is what you spend per year in dollars, rate is the percentage by which spending rises each year (5 means 5%) and years is the horizon, which may include a fraction such as 2.5. The extra figure is the gap in the final year only, that is how much more you would spend per year than today; it is not the total of all the extra money spent along the way. A rate of 0 or a horizon of 0 gives no change. A negative rate is accepted to model cutting back (the extra then prints as a negative amount such as -$19,260.63), but a rate of −100% or lower, a negative number of years or a negative current spending shows no result. Inflation and income are not modelled.
Worked example
Your household spends $48,000 a year and the habit grows 5% annually for 10 years. Growth factor: 1.0510 ≈ 1.6289. Future yearly spending: 48,000 × 1.6289 = $78,186.94. Extra per year: 78,186.94 − 48,000 = $30,186.94. In year ten you would be spending about $2,516 more every month than today, which is money that is not available to save.
Common mistakes
- Reading the extra figure as the total lost over ten years. It is only the extra yearly cost reached in the final year; the cumulative extra is much larger.
- Entering a monthly spending figure in the annual field. The tool expects yearly spending, so a monthly amount understates the result twelve times.
- Typing 0.05 for 5%. The rate is in percent, so 0.05 means five hundredths of a percent and shows almost no creep.
- Applying the rate to income instead of spending. Only the share of a raise that actually gets spent counts, so use the realistic growth of your spending, not the raise itself.
- Entering a negative number of years to look backwards. Negative years give no result; the tool only projects forward.
About this calculator
Lifestyle inflation (also called lifestyle creep) is the tendency for spending to rise in step with income — a raise or promotion quietly gets absorbed into a bigger apartment, a nicer car, more takeout, and pricier subscriptions instead of translating into higher savings. It's a well-documented behavioral-finance pattern, not a formal financial formula, but its effect compounds like one: a spending increase that seems trivial in a single month adds up to a large number once multiplied across twelve months and stacked year after year.
This calculator takes your current annual spending, a rate of yearly increase and a number of years, and shows how large your annual spending becomes at the end of that period, along with how much more per year that is than your current spending. It reports that final-year gap, not a running total of everything extra spent along the way. It's a way to see, in concrete dollars, what unchecked lifestyle creep costs against simply keeping your spending level while your income grows.
