Turkey License Plate Code Lookup

Which province is this plate from?

Result

İzmir

How it is calculated

The tool takes the plate code you type and looks it up in a fixed table of Turkey's 81 provinces, numbered 1 to 81. It reads the leading digits of the input, so 6, 06 and 006 all mean Ankara. There is no calculation: the code is an index into the list, for instance 1 is Adana, 6 is Ankara, 34 is İstanbul and 81 is Düzce. If the input is not a whole number, or is outside 1 to 81, the tool shows an invalid-code message. The table covers only the province code at the start of a Turkish plate, not the letters or the remaining digits that follow it.

Worked example

You see a car with the plate 35 ABC 123 and want to know where it is registered. Enter 35 as the code. The tool finds entry number 35 in the province table, and the result is İzmir. Entering 07 would give Antalya, and 82 would be rejected as an invalid code because the table ends at 81.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the whole plate (35 ABC 123) instead of only the two-digit province code at the front.
  • Assuming the order is strictly alphabetical. Provinces added later, such as Yalova (77) or Düzce (81), sit at the end of the list.
  • Typing 0 or 82 and expecting a province. Valid codes run from 1 to 81 only.
  • Assuming the code shows where the owner lives now. It shows where the vehicle was registered.

About this calculator

This calculator looks up which Turkish province a license plate code belongs to. Turkey assigns every il (province) a fixed number from 1 to 81, issued roughly in alphabetical order back when the system was introduced, so 34 is always Istanbul and 06 is always Ankara.

Drivers use it to identify where an unfamiliar plate on the road is from, and it settles the common trivia question of "what does that plate number mean" instantly, since the codes don't map neatly to alphabetical order for every province.

The tool reads the leading digits you type, so pasting a whole plate such as 34 ABC 123 works and returns the province for 34. Keep in mind that the code shows where the vehicle was registered. A car can be re-registered after its owner moves, and the plate itself will not tell you where the car is today. We only go from number to province. Would you also like the reverse lookup, province to number?
