LEI Validator
Paste a 20-character LEI to check whether its check digits are valid.
Result
How it is calculated
The code is trimmed of surrounding spaces and upper-cased, then must be exactly 20 letters and digits. Each letter is replaced by its number (A = 10 … Z = 35), digits stay as they are, and the long numeric string is reduced with mod 97 by processing it digit by digit. A valid LEI leaves a remainder of 1 (ISO 7064 MOD 97-10).
The output shows Valid or Invalid, the remainder, and the length counted against 20. If the length or characters are wrong, the remainder shows n/a. Spaces or hyphens inside the code are not removed, so they make it Invalid. The check only proves the check digits are consistent. It does not look the code up in any register.
Worked example
Enter 5493001KJTIIGC8Y1R12. It has 20 characters, so the length shows 20 / 20 chars. The letters become numbers (K = 20, J = 19, T = 29, I = 18, G = 16, C = 12, Y = 34, R = 27) and the resulting string is reduced modulo 97. The remainder is 1, so the status is Valid. Changing only the last digit to 3 gives remainder 2 and the status Invalid.
Common mistakes
- Pasting a code with spaces or hyphens, as some documents print it in groups: the tool does not strip them, so the length is over 20 and the result is Invalid.
- Entering 19 or 21 characters because a leading or trailing character was lost in copying: the remainder is then n/a.
- Reading Valid as proof that the entity exists: it only says the two check digits fit, and a typo-free but unregistered code also passes.
- Confusing the letter O with the digit 0 (or I with 1): they convert to different numbers, so the remainder will not be 1.
About this calculator
A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character alphanumeric code defined by ISO 17442 that uniquely identifies a legal entity participating in financial transactions worldwide, issued by accredited Local Operating Units under the oversight of the Global LEI Foundation (GLEIF).
The first 18 characters encode the entity and issuer information, while the final two are check digits computed with the ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 algorithm — the same checksum family used for IBAN — letters are converted to numbers (A=10 … Z=35) and the resulting numeric string must leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97.
Financial institutions, regulators, and counterparties validate LEIs before accepting them in trade reporting and KYC processes required under regimes like EMIR and MiFID II; this calculator runs the same MOD 97-10 check to confirm a pasted LEI's check digits are internally consistent, though it cannot confirm the code is actually registered to a real entity.

A Valid result only says the two check digits fit; it says nothing about whether the registration is current. LEI records have to be renewed periodically, so for onboarding or reporting you should also look the code up in the public GLEIF database and read its status and legal name. Which do you hit more often, mistyped codes copied from documents or codes you simply cannot find in the registry?
