Kilogram-Force to Newtons Converter
Enter a force in kgf to convert to newtons and pounds-force.
Result
How it is calculated
The kilogram-force is the force with which standard gravity pulls on one kilogram, and standard gravity is defined as 9.80665 m/s². So the conversion is N = kgf × 9.80665. The pounds-force figure uses lbf = kgf × 2.2046226, the number of pounds in a kilogram. Both are shown with two decimals. Negative values are not rejected and convert with the same factors, which may be useful for a force with an opposite direction. This is a pure unit conversion between force units, not a mass conversion, so it does not depend on where on Earth you are.
Worked example
A load cell is rated for 25 kgf. Newtons: 25 × 9.80665 = 245.16625, shown as 245.17 N. Pounds-force: 25 × 2.2046226 = 55.115565, shown as 55.12 lbf. A quick check: 1 kgf is close to 10 N, so 25 kgf should be close to 250 N, and 245.17 N agrees.
Common mistakes
- Treating kgf as a mass. A 25 kg object weighs 25 kgf only under standard gravity; the number you enter must already be a force reading.
- Using 10 or 9.8 in place of 9.80665 for precise work; the tool uses the exact standard value.
- Confusing kgf with kilonewton (kN). 1 kN is about 101.97 kgf, not 1 kgf.
- Confusing lbf with lb mass. The pound result here is pounds-force, a unit of force.
- Reading torque specs such as kgf·m as simple force. A torque in kgf·m needs multiplying by 9.80665 for N·m, but the lever length is part of the unit.
About this calculator
The kilogram-force (kgf) is a gravitational unit of force — the weight of a 1 kg mass under standard gravity — while the newton (N) is the SI unit defined from mass and acceleration directly. Because standard gravity is fixed at 9.80665 m/s², the conversion is exact: 1 kgf = 9.80665 N (about 2.2046 lbf).
Mechanical and structural engineers still encounter kgf on torque wrench specs, load cell ratings, and older European or Asian machine datasheets, and need to convert those figures to newtons to work with modern SI-based stress and force calculations.

Datasheets sometimes print a load rating as kg when they really mean kgf. A cell, hook or cable rated 100 kg is a force rating of 100 kgf, which is 980.67 N here, or about 0.98 kN if you divide by 1000. Check which unit the sheet's other lines use before you compare it with a rating in newtons. Which kind of datasheet gives you kgf figures?
