Jet Lag Recovery Calculator
Enter the time zones you crossed and your direction of travel to see the recovery time.

How it is calculated
The tool assumes the body clock can shift by a fixed number of hours per day, and the speed depends on the direction of travel: 1.0 hour per day flying east and 1.5 hours per day flying west. Then days = zones ÷ shift per day. East therefore takes one day per time zone, while west takes two thirds of a day per zone, which is why the same trip is shorter westward. Days are shown to one decimal. The tool also prints the shift per day and the total shift needed, which is the number of zones expressed in hours (a fractional zone count such as 7.5 is shown as 7.5 h). Zones must be above 0 and at most 12, and the direction must be east (the default when blank) or west; anything else shows no result. This is a rule-of-thumb estimate, not a prediction for any one person.
Worked example
You fly west across 7 time zones. Going west the tool uses 1.5 hours of shift per day. Days = 7 ÷ 1.5 = 4.67, shown as 4.7 days. The tool lists the shift per day as 1.5 h and the total shift needed as 7 h. If you flew the same 7 zones east instead, the rate would be 1.0 hour per day and the answer 7.0 days, almost three days longer.
Common mistakes
- Counting the flight hours instead of the time zones. A 12-hour flight that crosses only 3 zones needs 3, not 12.
- Choosing the direction by where you live rather than the way you actually travelled. Flying from Istanbul to New York is west, whatever the return trip.
- Entering the clock difference as minutes (for example 360 for 6 hours). The field is the number of time zones, and anything above 12 gives no result.
- Treating the days as a deadline. The figure is a rough average; some people adjust faster or slower, so use it for planning and not for certainty.
- Adding the outbound and return trips together. The tool handles one leg; for the way back, run it again with the opposite direction.

About this calculator
Jet lag happens because your internal circadian clock keeps running on the rhythm of your departure time zone while the sun and social schedule around you have shifted, and it takes time for the body's clock to resynchronise. This calculator assumes the clock shifts about one hour per day after flying east, so recovery takes roughly one day per time zone crossed, and about 1.5 hours per day after flying west, so each day covers 1.5 zones (6 zones west is 4 days).
Direction matters because the human circadian rhythm naturally runs slightly longer than 24 hours, which makes it easier to delay the clock (as happens flying west, where the day effectively lengthens) than to advance it (flying east, where the day is compressed and the body has to catch up faster). That's why travellers typically report recovering somewhat faster from westward flights than from eastward ones covering the same number of time zones.
The estimate covers up to 12 time zones in either direction, with eastward and westward trips recovering at different speeds.
