Itemized Bill Split Calculator
List each person and their items to split the bill fairly.

How it is calculated
Type one item per line in the form Name: amount. The tool splits each line at its last colon, so the part before is the person and the part after must be a plain number. Several lines with the same name are added together (names are case-sensitive, so Ana and ana count as two people). Everyone's items are summed into a personal subtotal, and the tax and tip percentages are then added on top of the whole subtotal: owed = subtotal × (1 + tax% ÷ 100 + tip% ÷ 100). Tax and tip are added together, not compounded, so the tip is figured on the pre-tax amount. Because the same factor applies to everyone, each person pays their own share of tax and tip. If tax or tip is left empty it counts as 0. The total of all items must be above zero. A line without a colon, a name with no text or an amount that is not a number stops the calculation. Dollar signs on the results are only symbols.
Worked example
Four people share a bill. The items are Ana 18.50 and 6.50, Ben 12, Cem 25 and Dia 14, with 8% tax and a 15% tip. Step 1: Ana's two lines add up to 25, so the whole bill before tax and tip is 25 + 12 + 25 + 14, shown as $76.00. Step 2: the factor is 1 + 0.08 + 0.15 = 1.23. Step 3: Ana and Cem each pay 25 × 1.23 = 30.75, Ben pays 12 × 1.23 = 14.76 and Dia pays 14 × 1.23 = 17.22. The grand total is $93.48.
Common mistakes
- Writing the amount with a currency sign or a decimal comma, such as
Ana: $12orAna: 12,50. The amount must be a plain number with a decimal point (12.50), otherwise the tool returns nothing. - Forgetting the colon. A line such as
Ana 12has no separator, and a single bad line stops the whole result. - Spelling a name differently on two lines, for example Ana and ana. They are treated as two different people, so they get two separate shares.
- Entering the tax and tip as amounts of money. The two fields are percentages, so type 15 for a 15% tip, not 11.40.
- Including the tax or tip already printed on the receipt as an item. The tool adds tax and tip itself, so the lines should be the pre-tax item prices; otherwise they are counted twice.
About this calculator
Splitting a restaurant bill evenly overcharges the person who ordered a side salad and undercharges the one who got the surf-and-turf. An itemized split instead assigns each dish to whoever ordered it, sums each person's subtotal, and then distributes the bill's tax and tip proportionally — so someone whose order made up 30% of the pre-tax subtotal also covers 30% of the tax and tip, rather than an equal per-head share.
This calculator lets you list everyone at the table along with their individual items and prices, then automatically works out each person's fair total including their share of tax and tip. Groups of friends splitting a dinner check, coworkers expensing a shared meal, and roommates dividing a group order use it to settle up accurately without anyone doing napkin math or feeling shortchanged over who ordered the $40 steak.

A dish the whole table shared has to be split by hand, because each line belongs to one name. Write a 9.00 appetizer shared by two diners as two lines of 4.50, one per person. Also note that the tip percentage is figured on the pre-tax subtotal: a tip of 15% of the post-tax total at 8% tax equals 16.2% here. How do you handle shared plates when you split a check?
