Hex Addition Calculator
Enter two hexadecimal numbers to add them together.
Result
How it is calculated
Each hex number is read as base 16, added, and the sum is written back in base 16. In symbols, sum = a + b, where a and b are the values of the two inputs (digits 0 to 9 and letters A to F, upper or lower case, each digit worth 16 times the digit to its right). The tool adds digit by digit with carries at 16, so it is exact and does not depend on floating-point numbers. It shows the sum in hex (in capitals), the sum in decimal and the decimal value of each input. Each operand may have up to 64 hex digits (256 bits); leading zeros are ignored, and a longer operand gives no result. Only plain hex digits are accepted: a 0x prefix, a #, a minus sign, spaces inside the number or an empty box give no result.
Worked example
Add 3E8 and 7D0. Convert each to decimal: 3E8 = 3 × 256 + 14 × 16 + 8 = 768 + 224 + 8 = 1,000, and 7D0 = 7 × 256 + 13 × 16 + 0 = 1,792 + 208 = 2,000. Add: 1,000 + 2,000 = 3,000. Write 3,000 in base 16: 3,000 = 11 × 256 + 11 × 16 + 8, which is B, B, 8. The hex sum is BB8, and the decimal sum is 3,000.
Common mistakes
- Typing a
0xprefix, as in0x3E8, or a#as in a colour code. Only the digits are accepted, and the prefix makes the tool return nothing. - Adding hex digits as if they were decimal, for example thinking that 9 + 1 = 10 in hex. In hex, 9 + 1 = A, and the carry happens at 16, so F + 1 = 10.
- Entering a decimal number such as 1000 and reading it as hex. The tool reads 1000 as hex, which is 4,096 in decimal.
- Expecting negative numbers. A minus sign is not accepted, so for a subtraction use a different tool.
- Pasting a value longer than 64 hex digits, such as a 512-bit key. Operands over 64 digits are rejected rather than truncated.
About this calculator
Hexadecimal (base 16) uses sixteen digits, 0 through 9, then A through F for the values 10 through 15, and adding two hex numbers works exactly like decimal column addition, except you carry a 1 to the next column whenever a column's sum reaches 16 instead of 10.
Hex shows up constantly in computing because it maps neatly onto binary: each hex digit represents exactly four bits, so hex is used to write memory addresses, color codes in web design (like #1E6BFF), MAC and IPv6 addresses, and low-level byte values in a far more compact and human-readable form than long strings of ones and zeros. Programmers and students doing hex arithmetic by hand need to add these values correctly when debugging memory offsets, combining color channels, or working through computer science coursework.
