Hamster Cage Space Calculator
Choose the species and number of hamsters to find the minimum cage floor area.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool starts from a base floor area for one hamster: 5000 cm² for a Syrian hamster and 4000 cm² for a dwarf hamster. Every additional hamster adds one and a half times the base: area = base + (count − 1) × 1.5 × base. The result is also shown in square inches (cm² ÷ 6.4516), with a short recommendation.
Only a Syrian or a dwarf species can be chosen, and any other value is treated as Syrian. A fractional count is rounded down to a whole number, and the count must be at least 1. The area means unbroken floor: space that is free of wheels, houses, and other items standing on it, so measure the base of the cage, not the height. For two or more hamsters the tool always warns that living together is risky, because hamsters can become aggressive; it gives a minimum, not a guarantee that sharing will work.
Worked example
Two dwarf hamsters. Base area: 4000 cm². One extra hamster adds 1.5 × 4000 = 6000 cm². Total: 4000 + 6000 = 10,000 cm². In square inches: 10,000 ÷ 6.4516 = 1,550 sq in. A cage base of 100 cm × 100 cm would just reach this figure; 100 cm × 50 cm (5,000 cm²) would be enough for one Syrian hamster, but not for these two.
Common mistakes
- Counting the whole cage size instead of the free floor. A wheel, a house or a large bowl takes part of the base, so the cage needs to be bigger than the minimum shown.
- Multiplying the height in. Tall cages with several levels do not replace floor area; only the unbroken base counts here.
- Assuming two hamsters need twice the area. In this tool the second one adds 1.5 times the base, so two Syrians need 12,500 cm², not 10,000.
- Taking the dwarf minimum for a Syrian hamster because both are small pets. Syrians use the larger base of 5,000 cm² per animal.
- Reading the output as proof that hamsters can share a cage. The tool warns that it is risky, and many hamsters, especially Syrians, do better alone.
About this calculator
Animal welfare organizations recommend a minimum unbroken floor area for hamster cages — space free of platforms, wheels, and other fixtures cutting into the usable footprint — because hamsters are active burrowers and runners that need continuous ground area to express natural behaviors. Requirements differ meaningfully by species: Syrian hamsters, being solitary and larger, need substantially more floor space than smaller dwarf species, which are sometimes (though not always) kept in pairs or small groups.
This calculator applies species-specific minimums recommended by rodent welfare groups and exotic-pet veterinarians to your chosen species and hamster count, helping pet owners and breeders check whether a cage on the market — often sized more for aesthetics than animal welfare — actually meets a healthy minimum before buying.

The area is unbroken floor space. Extra levels, tubes and shelves do not count toward it, and 5,000 square centimetres is about a 100 by 50 cm base for one Syrian. The tool will compute figures for several animals, but Syrians are normally kept alone, so read those as a warning rather than a plan. What size cage are you comparing?
