Chicken Coop Size Calculator

Size a chicken coop and run from your flock size and space allowance per bird.

How it is calculated

Each space is the flock size multiplied by an allowance per bird: coop = birds × coop ft², run = birds × run ft², roost = birds × roost ft, and total = coop + run. Areas are in square feet and the roost bar is in linear feet; the tool does not convert units, so metric figures must be converted first. Nesting boxes follow a fixed rule built into the tool: boxes = ceil(birds ÷ 4), never fewer than one, so every started group of four hens adds a box. The number of birds must be a whole number of at least 1, so 7.5 birds gives no result, and all three allowances must be positive. The defaults (4 ft², 10 ft², 0.75 ft) are starting points; larger breeds, bantams or a smaller run need different allowances.

Worked example

Seven hens, with 4 ft² of coop, 10 ft² of run and 0.75 ft of roost bar each. Coop: 7 × 4 = 28.00 sq ft. Run: 7 × 10 = 70.00 sq ft, so the total footprint is 28 + 70 = 98.00 sq ft. Roost bar: 7 × 0.75 = 5.25 ft. Nesting boxes: 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75, rounded up to 2 boxes.

Common mistakes

  • Entering allowances in square metres or metres: the fields are square feet and feet, so 4 m² per bird would be read as 4 ft² and the coop would come out far too small.
  • Adding coop and run area together and calling that the coop floor; the total is the whole footprint, while only the coop figure is the enclosed, roofed floor.
  • Sizing for today's count only: with 7 hens you get 2 nesting boxes, but adding two chicks pushes it to 3 boxes and 8 ft² more coop floor.
  • Treating the roost figure as the length of one perch; it is the combined bar length for all birds, which you can split across several bars at different heights.
  • Entering a fractional flock such as 7.5 birds or a zero or negative allowance. These give no result rather than a rounded answer.

About this calculator

Coop sizing follows per-bird space guidelines from poultry-keeping extension services: roughly 2 to 4 square feet of indoor coop floor per standard-size hen (more for larger breeds, less for bantams), 8 to 10 square feet of outdoor run per bird if they are not fully free-ranging, 8 to 12 inches (about 0.7 to 1 foot) of roost bar length per hen for overnight perching, and one nesting box for every 3 to 4 hens since they will happily share.

Backyard poultry keepers use this calculation before building or buying a coop, because undersizing any one of these — floor space, run space, roost length or nest boxes — leads directly to stress, feather-pecking and reduced egg-laying, while a coop sized only for today's flock leaves no room if a few more chicks get added next spring.

Multiply your flock size by the space you allow per bird (coop and run in square feet, roost bar in feet) and you get the coop floor, run and total area, the roost length and the number of nest boxes (one per 4 hens, rounded up) for a calm, uncrowded flock.
