Golf Handicap Calculator
Paste the score differentials of your last 3 to 20 rounds to get your Handicap Index.

How it is calculated
Enter the Score Differentials of your recent rounds, oldest first, separated by spaces or commas. Each one is (adjusted gross score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope for a round (the Golf Handicap Differential Calculator works it out). If you paste more than 20, only the last 20 count. The tool sorts them and averages the lowest few, as in Rule 5.2 of the World Handicap System: with 20 differentials the lowest 8; with 19 the lowest 7; 17–18 → 6; 15–16 → 5; 12–14 → 4; 9–11 → 3; 7–8 → 2; 6 → 2 and minus 1.0; 5 → 1; 4 → 1 and minus 1.0; 3 → 1 and minus 2.0. The Handicap Index = average + adjustment, rounded to one decimal and capped at 54.0. It shows how many differentials were used, their average and the adjustment. At least 3 are needed (54 holes). The soft and hard caps, exceptional-score reductions and playing conditions adjustments that your federation applies are not included, so this is an estimate of the official index.
Worked example
You have 8 rounds with differentials 14.2, 19.8, 16.5, 21.0, 12.9, 17.3, 18.1 and 15.6. With 8 differentials the rule takes the lowest 2 with no adjustment: 12.9 and 14.2. Their average is (12.9 + 14.2) ÷ 2 = 13.55, rounded to 13.6, so the Handicap Index is 13.6 and the tool shows 2 / 8 used. With only three rounds, say 16.0, 18.5 and 20.2, it would take the lowest one and subtract 2.0: 16.0 − 2.0 = 14.0.
Common mistakes
- Entering gross scores instead of differentials. A score of 92 is not a differential; convert each round with its course rating and slope first.
- Pasting rounds newest first when you have more than 20. The tool keeps the last 20 in the list, so put the oldest first.
- Averaging all rounds. The index uses only the lowest few differentials, so it reflects your potential, not your average round.
- Applying the old 0.96 factor. The World Handicap System does not multiply the average by 0.96; that belonged to the former USGA formula.
- Treating the result as official. Your federation also applies caps and exceptional-score reductions, so its figure can differ slightly.

About this calculator
Golf's World Handicap System (WHS), used by the USGA, R&A and national golf federations worldwide, first converts a round into a Score Differential: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating. The constant 113 is the slope rating of a course of "standard" difficulty, so the formula normalizes every round to that common baseline regardless of which course you played.
A Handicap Index is then the average of your best Score Differentials: the lowest 8 of your most recent 20. With fewer than 20 rounds on record, Rule 5.2 of the Rules of Handicapping uses fewer of them (the lowest 1 of 3 to 5, 2 of 6 to 8, 3 of 9 to 11 and so on) and subtracts 2.0 with only 3 rounds and 1.0 with 4 or 6. The result is rounded to one decimal and cannot exceed 54.0. Paste the differentials of your recent rounds (the Golf Handicap Differential Calculator gives one per round) and this calculator applies that table. There is no 0.96 factor in the WHS; that multiplier belonged to the older USGA formula.

Here the differentials are used as typed, so the index is only as honest as the list. The ten sample rounds give 16.5 from the lowest 3, shown as 3 / 10. The tool keeps the last 20 entries and does not apply the soft cap, hard cap or exceptional-score reduction, so an official index can differ. Enter differentials, not raw scores. How many rounds do you have on record right now?
