Garden Watering Calculator
See how much water your garden bed really needs.

How it is calculated
The bed's length and width are read in feet and the target water depth in inches. The tool computes the area A = length × width in square feet, then gallons = A × depth × 0.623. The constant 0.623 is the number of US gallons in a layer 1 inch deep over 1 square foot. Liters are gallons × 3.78541. Both results are rounded to one decimal. All three inputs must be greater than zero. The depth is the amount that must reach the bed in total, so rain that has already fallen should be subtracted by you. The tool assumes an even, rectangular bed and does not allow for runoff, evaporation or soil type.
Worked example
A bed is 10 ft long and 4 ft wide, and you want to apply 1 inch of water. Area: 10 × 4 = 40 square feet. Gallons: 40 × 1 × 0.623 = 24.92, shown as 24.9 gal. Liters: 24.92 × 3.78541 is about 94.3, shown as 94.3 L. So a drip line or hose has to deliver roughly 94 liters to the bed to reach that depth.
Common mistakes
- Entering meters or centimeters for length and width. The fields are in feet, so convert first: 3 m is about 9.84 ft.
- Typing the depth in centimeters. The depth is in inches; 2.5 cm is 1 inch.
- Confusing the weekly target with a single watering. If the guideline is 1 inch a week and you water twice, enter 0.5 inch per session.
- Ignoring rainfall. If it rained half an inch, only half an inch needs to come from the hose.
- Entering a non-rectangular bed as length times width. Split an L-shaped bed into rectangles and add the results.
About this calculator
Most vegetable and flower beds need about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water per week — from rain or irrigation combined — and this calculator converts that depth guideline into an actual volume of water (gallons or liters) by multiplying it by your bed's area, since a shallow layer over a large area adds up fast.
Gardeners use it to avoid both underwatering, which stresses roots and cuts yields, and overwatering, which wastes water and can promote root rot and fungal disease — knowing the volume target for a specific bed also makes it easy to time a drip line or soaker hose instead of guessing by feel.

The result is the volume to deliver to the bed, not how long to run the hose. To get a time, fill a bucket of known size from your hose or sprinkler, time it, and divide the volume by that rate. A 10 by 4 foot bed at 1 inch comes to 24.9 gallons, or 94.3 litres. Subtract any rain you have already had from the depth. What watering setup are you converting for?
