How it is calculated

The two fees are applied one after the other, not added together: net = gross × (1 − platform% / 100) × (1 − processing% / 100). The platform commission comes off the invoice first, then the processing percentage is taken from what is left. fees = gross − net is the total money lost, and take-home = net / gross × 100 is the share of the invoice you keep. Gross must be above zero and both fee rates must be zero or more, entered as plain percentages (10 for 10 percent). Only percentage fees are modelled: a fixed per-transaction charge, currency conversion, tax or withdrawal fees are not included. Amounts are shown in dollars, and real fee schedules differ by platform and country.

Worked example

You invoice 2,000 through a platform that takes 10 percent, and the payment processor charges 3 percent. After the platform commission you have 2,000 × 0.90 = 1,800. The processor then takes 3 percent of that: 1,800 × 0.97 = 1,746. Net pay is $1,746.00, total fees are $254.00 and your take-home share is 87.30%. Adding the rates (13 percent of 2,000 = 260) would overstate the fees by 6.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the two percentages and applying 13 percent to the gross. The processing fee is charged on the amount after the platform commission, so the true loss is slightly smaller than the sum of the rates.
  • Entering a rate as a fraction, such as 0.10 for 10 percent. The fields take percentages, so 0.10 would mean one tenth of a percent.
  • Expecting a fixed fee such as 0.30 per payment to be included. Only percentage fees are calculated, so for small invoices the result will be too optimistic unless you adjust the gross or the rate.
  • Treating the net as profit. It is still before income tax, self-employment contributions, software costs and unpaid time, which this tool does not subtract.
  • Comparing platforms using only the headline commission. A platform with a lower commission but a higher processing rate can leave you with less, which is why the take-home percentage is the number to compare.

About this calculator

Freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Etsy rarely pay out the full invoiced amount: they typically deduct a platform commission (often 5–20% depending on the platform and tier) and, separately, a payment-processing fee (commonly a small percentage, similar to PayPal or Stripe rates) before the money reaches your bank account.

This calculator takes both fees as percentages and applies them to your gross earnings in sequence — the processing fee is taken from what is left after the platform commission — to show your real take-home pay, the total fees and your take-home share. Freelancers need these numbers for budgeting, setting tax aside, or comparing platforms. Fixed per-transaction fees are not included; subtract them from the result.

The tool takes the processing fee from the amount left after the platform fee. If your processor actually charges on the full invoice, the true net is lower by gross × platform % × processing % ÷ 10,000, which is 5.80 on the default 1000. Post the percentages of a platform you are weighing, and say which amount each one is charged on.
