Fraction to Decimal Converter

Turn any fraction into a decimal.

How it is calculated

A fraction is a division: decimal = numerator ÷ denominator, and percent = decimal × 100. The decimal is shown rounded to two places while the percentage is also rounded to two places, so the percentage keeps more of the information. A denominator of 0 gives no result. Because the numbers are read as ordinary decimals, mixed numbers must be turned into improper fractions first, for example 2 1/4 becomes 9/4. Repeating decimals such as 1/3 are cut at two places (0.33), not shown with a bar.

Worked example

Convert 3/8. Divide 3 by 8 to get 0.375. Rounded to two places the decimal reads 0.38. As a percentage, 0.375 × 100 = 37.50%. The percentage is the more exact of the two outputs here.

Common mistakes

  • Swapping numerator and denominator: 8/3 is 2.67, not 0.38.
  • Treating the rounded decimal 0.38 as exact; 3/8 is exactly 0.375, and the percentage 37.50% shows it.
  • Typing a mixed number as one fraction; enter 9/4, not 2 1/4.
  • Entering a denominator of zero; division by zero is undefined and no result is shown.
  • Assuming 1/3 equals 0.33; it is 0.3333… repeating.

About this calculator

This tool performs the long-division method a fraction represents: dividing the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal, then multiplying by 100 for the percentage. Some fractions terminate cleanly (like 1/4 = 0.25) while others repeat forever (like 1/3 = 0.333...), and the calculator rounds these to a practical number of decimal places.

It's used by students checking homework, cooks converting recipe measurements, and tradespeople reading imperial measurements like 3/8" or 5/16" on a tape measure or drill bit set, where a decimal equivalent is often easier to compare or type into a machine than the fraction itself.

For machining or woodworking, the two-place decimal can hide detail. A drill of 5/16 inch shows as 0.31, but its percentage reads 31.25 percent, and dividing that by 100 gives the full 0.3125. Reach for the percentage line whenever you need three or four places to type into a machine. Which fractions do you convert most often, tape-measure fractions or recipe amounts?
