Foreign Transaction Fee Calculator

$25.50
$875.50

How it is calculated

The tool applies one percentage to one amount: fee = amount × fee% ÷ 100 and total = amount + fee. Here amount is the purchase value in your card's own currency (the figure your statement would show before any fee) and fee% is the foreign transaction fee rate written as a plain percent, so 3 means 3%, not 0.03. Both inputs must be zero or positive; a negative number gives no result. The two results are shown as money to two decimals. The calculator adds only this surcharge. It does not model the exchange rate or any currency-conversion markup, which your card network or issuer may apply on top, and fee rates differ between cards, so check your card's fee schedule for the figure to enter.

Worked example

Suppose you pay for a hotel abroad and your statement shows 850 before fees, and your card charges 3%. Step 1: 850 × 3 ÷ 100 = 25.50, so the fee is $25.50. Step 2: 850 + 25.50 = 875.50. The card is therefore charged a total of $875.50. On a card with a 0% foreign fee the same purchase would stay at 850, so the fee is the entire difference.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the rate as a decimal (0.03) instead of a percent (3), which makes the fee 100 times too small.
  • Entering the amount in the foreign currency instead of in your card's home currency, so the fee is calculated on the wrong base.
  • Expecting the result to include the exchange-rate markup. This tool adds only the percentage fee.
  • Using the fee rate of a different card, or the rate for cash advances, rather than the one for purchases.

About this calculator

Most credit and debit cards charge a foreign transaction fee — typically 1% to 3% of the purchase amount — whenever a transaction is processed in a foreign currency or routed through a foreign bank, even if you're paying in your home currency at checkout. The fee is calculated as purchase amount × fee rate and added on top of the purchase, so the total charged to your card is amount + fee, separate from any currency-conversion markup the network itself applies.

This calculator takes your purchase amount and your card's fee rate and shows the exact surcharge and total charge. Travelers use it before a trip to compare cards and estimate the real cost of spending abroad, and frequent international shoppers use it to check whether a no-foreign-transaction-fee card is worth switching to.

Before trusting the fee line, check which amount your statement actually shows. This tool multiplies whatever figure you enter, so a purchase of 200 at 2.5 gives a fee of 5.00 and a total of 205.00. If the merchant already converted the price for you, some issuers still add a fee, and others do not, so compare the card's fee schedule. Which fee rates have you seen on cards you have held?
