Flying Sprint Speed Calculator
Enter the segment distance and time to find your flying sprint speed.

How it is calculated
Enter the length of the timed segment in metres and the time to cover it in seconds. The speed is plain distance over time: v = distance ÷ time in m/s. The tool then converts it, km/h = m/s × 3.6 and mph = m/s × 2.23694, and shows all three to two decimals. Both values must be above zero. It reports the average speed over the segment you timed, so it only equals top speed if the segment is short and run at full effort after the build-up; it does not know how far the athlete ran before the timing gates or how fast they were going at the start.
Worked example
An athlete runs a flying 30 m segment in 3.2 seconds after a build-up run. Speed in m/s: 30 ÷ 3.2 = 9.375, shown as 9.38 m/s. In km/h: 9.375 × 3.6 = 33.75 km/h. In mph: 9.375 × 2.23694 = 20.97 mph. If the next session gives 3.1 s for the same 30 m, speed rises to 9.68 m/s.
Common mistakes
- Timing from a standing start. Then the result is an average that includes acceleration, far below top speed, and not a flying speed.
- Entering the whole race distance but only the time of the fast section, or the reverse. The distance and time must describe the same segment between the same two gates.
- Entering the time in minutes, or in a format like 0:03.2. The field is seconds as a number, so type 3.2.
- Comparing a 10 m flying split with a 30 m one. Short segments give a higher peak; compare values only over the same distance.
About this calculator
A “flying” sprint measures top speed over a short segment that a runner or rider enters already at speed, rather than from a standing start — common examples are the flying 10m or flying 30m splits used in sprint testing, and the flying 200m time trial used in track cycling. Because acceleration is excluded, the result isolates pure maximum velocity: speed = segment distance ÷ segment time.
Coaches and sports scientists use flying-segment speed to track an athlete’s true top-end speed independent of start technique or reaction time, comparing it across sessions to monitor sprint development. Time a flying segment over a known distance and the speed is reported in m/s, km/h and mph, ready to compare with published sprint benchmarks.

A flying segment starts after a run-up, so the time excludes acceleration and the speed is an average over that stretch only. Covering 30 m in 3.8 s gives 7.89 m/s, 28.42 km/h and 17.66 mph. Hand-timed splits tend to read faster than electronic gates, so compare only like with like. A shorter segment also has a bigger share of timing error. Which segment length do you time: 10, 20 or 30 m?
