How it is calculated
The target portfolio is yearly spending divided by the withdrawal rate: target = annual expenses ÷ (rate ÷ 100), which is the same as multiplying expenses by 100 ÷ rate. Annual expenses is what you want to spend per year in dollars, and rate is the share of the portfolio you plan to withdraw each year, in percent (3.5 means 3.5%). The tool also shows monthly budget = annual expenses ÷ 12. The relationship is inverse: halving the rate doubles the target. There is no inflation, tax, investment-return or time-horizon modelling; the withdrawal rate is the only safety assumption, and it is yours to choose. A rate of zero or below, a rate above 100, or negative expenses returns no result; zero expenses gives a zero target.
Worked example
You want to spend $150,000 a year in retirement and choose a 3.5% withdrawal rate. Monthly budget: 150,000 ÷ 12 = $12,500.00. Target portfolio: 150,000 ÷ 0.035 = $4,285,714.29. At a 4% rate the same spending would need 150,000 ÷ 0.04 = $3,750,000, so choosing the more cautious 3.5% adds about half a million dollars to the goal.
Common mistakes
- Typing 0.035 for the rate. The field is in percent, so 3.5% is entered as 3.5; 0.035 would give a target of about $428.6 million.
- Entering a rate above 100, which gives no result. Realistic withdrawal rates are a few percent, so check the decimal point.
- Entering pre-tax income instead of spending. The target is based on what you will actually spend, and any tax on withdrawals has to be added to that figure yourself.
- Leaving out costs that appear after retiring early, such as health insurance, which can be larger than the budget you live on today.
- Entering the monthly budget in the annual field, which produces a target twelve times too small.

About this calculator
FatFIRE is a variant of the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement aimed at retiring early without cutting back — maintaining a comfortable, often upper-middle-class-or-higher lifestyle rather than the bare-bones budget associated with Lean FIRE. The target nest egg is calculated by dividing desired annual spending by a chosen withdrawal rate (commonly modeled around the 4% rule derived from the Trinity Study), so a higher target spending level and a more conservative withdrawal rate both push the required portfolio size up.
People pursuing FatFIRE typically have higher incomes, want to preserve travel, private schooling, a larger home, or other lifestyle spending in retirement, and often plan for a longer time horizon since 'early' can mean retiring decades before traditional retirement age — which increases sequence-of-returns risk and argues for a more conservative withdrawal assumption.
Your desired annual spending and withdrawal rate go in, and the portfolio size needed to sustain that lifestyle indefinitely comes out.
