Driving CO₂ Emissions Calculator
Find the carbon footprint of a drive.
Result
How it is calculated
Emissions are the fuel burned multiplied by a per-litre factor: litres = distance × economy / 100 and CO₂ = litres × factor. Distance is in kilometres and economy in litres per 100 km. The factors are 2.31 kg CO₂ per litre for petrol, 2.68 for diesel and 1.51 for LPG; any other fuel value returns no result. Distance can be zero but not negative, and economy must be above zero. The figures count only the carbon dioxide released when the fuel burns in the engine, not the emissions from producing and transporting the fuel. Divide the result by the number of occupants to get a per-person figure.
Worked example
A petrol car uses 7 L per 100 km and covers 500 km. Fuel burned: 500 × 7 / 100 = 35.00 L. CO₂ = 35 × 2.31 = 80.85 kg. If the same trip were driven with a diesel engine of the same consumption, the factor 2.68 would give 93.80 kg.
Common mistakes
- Entering miles per gallon as the economy; it needs litres per 100 km.
- Entering miles for distance, which the tool treats as kilometres.
- Choosing the wrong fuel type, since diesel produces more CO₂ per litre than petrol.
- Comparing a per-vehicle figure with a per-passenger figure for a train or plane.
- Using it for electric or hybrid cars, whose emissions depend on the electricity source and are not modelled.
About this calculator
This calculator estimates a trip's carbon footprint by dividing distance by fuel economy to get liters (or gallons) consumed, then multiplying by an emissions factor specific to the fuel type — around 2.31 kg CO₂ per liter of petrol and roughly 2.68 kg CO₂ per liter of diesel, since diesel is denser and carbon-richer per liter.
It's used by commuters curious about their driving footprint, people comparing a planned trip's emissions against flying or taking the train, and small businesses estimating Scope 1 emissions from a company vehicle fleet for a basic sustainability report.

The consumption field takes litres per 100 km. If your car reports miles per gallon, divide 235.2 by that figure for US gallons, so 30 mpg is about 7.84 L/100 km. If it reports km per litre, divide 100 by it. A tank-to-tank or trip-computer figure from your own driving is usually more realistic than a brochure number. Which vehicle type or fuel would you like to see added, such as hybrids?
