Distance per Stroke Calculator
How far does each stroke take you?
Result
How it is calculated
Enter the distance you swam and the number of arm strokes it took. The tool divides one by the other: DPS = distance / strokes, rounded to 2 decimals. The result is in the same unit you entered for distance, per stroke, so metres give metres per stroke and yards give yards per stroke. A higher number means each stroke carries you further. Zero or negative inputs return no result. Use a clean stretch such as one pool length and count strokes the same way every time, otherwise sessions cannot be compared. Distance per stroke is not speed; speed is DPS multiplied by stroke rate.
Worked example
A swimmer covers a 25 m length in 18 strokes. Divide the distance by the strokes: 25 / 18 = 1.3888..., which the tool rounds to 1.39 metres per stroke. A month later the same length takes 16 strokes: 25 / 16 = 1.5625, or 1.56. That is about 0.17 m more per stroke, an efficiency gain you can see even if the lap time stays the same.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units between sessions, such as metres in one entry and yards in another. The answer carries whichever unit you typed, so keep it constant.
- Counting strokes inconsistently, for instance every hand entry once and only one arm another time. The result halves or doubles and trends become meaningless.
- Entering a long set distance with the stroke count of a single length. Both numbers must refer to the same swim.
- Reading a higher DPS as always better. A very long, slow stroke lowers your tempo, so speed can drop; check DPS together with stroke rate or time.
About this calculator
Distance per stroke (DPS) is a core swim-efficiency metric: it's simply the distance covered divided by the number of arm strokes taken to cover it, and it tells you how much ground each individual stroke is actually buying you. A swimmer with strong technique and a long, efficient pull covers more distance per stroke than one who is thrashing with a short, rushed stroke — even if both are swimming at the same speed, because the inefficient swimmer is compensating with a higher stroke rate (stroke rate = tempo, DPS = efficiency, and speed is the product of the two).
Swim coaches track DPS in drills like the "golf" test (adding stroke count and time together to score technique) and in stroke-count sets over a fixed pool length, because it isolates technique from raw fitness — a swimmer can improve DPS through better body position, catch technique and streamline off the wall, independent of how fit they are. Competitive swimmers monitor DPS trends across a season to confirm technical drills are translating into real efficiency gains, not just faster turnover.
This calculator divides your total distance by your stroke count to give you the exact meters (or yards) covered per stroke, so you can track efficiency changes over time.
