Density Calculator
Find density as mass divided by volume.
Result
How it is calculated
Density is mass per unit of volume: ρ = m / V. The tool does no unit conversion: the result is in whatever mass unit you typed divided by whatever volume unit you typed. Grams with cubic centimetres give g/cm³, kilograms with cubic metres give kg/m³, and the two scales differ by a factor of 1,000 (1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³). Keep both inputs in matching units from the same system. The volume must be greater than zero, otherwise nothing is returned; the result is rounded to two decimals. Mass should be the amount of material itself, and volume the space it actually occupies, so for a hollow or porous object you obtain a bulk density, not that of the pure material.
Worked example
A metal block has a mass of 540 g and occupies a volume of 200 cm³. Divide the mass by the volume: 540 / 200 = 2.7. The density is 2.70 g/cm³, which is the commonly quoted value for aluminium. In SI units the same block would be 2,700 kg/m³. If the same 540 g object had a volume of 540 cm³, the density would be 1.00 g/cm³, about that of water.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units, such as mass in kilograms with volume in cubic centimetres, which gives a number that matches neither kg/m³ nor g/cm³.
- Entering the dimension (length in cm) instead of the volume in cm³, or forgetting that a litre is 1,000 cm³.
- Using weight in newtons or pounds-force in place of mass.
- Measuring the volume of a hollow object by its outer size and treating the result as the density of the material.
About this calculator
This calculator applies the basic physics formula density = mass / volume (ρ = m/V), typically expressed in kg/m³ or g/cm³, to tell you how tightly matter is packed into a given space.
Chemistry and physics students use it to identify unknown materials by comparing a measured density against known reference values (water is 1 g/cm³, aluminum around 2.7 g/cm³), while engineers and shipping companies use it to check whether an object will float, estimate the weight of a shipment from its volume, or verify material purity. The calculator works with any consistent mass and volume units you enter, so it handles both a small lab sample and a bulk cargo container the same way.

The tool divides and never converts, so the unit of the answer is your mass unit over your volume unit. Grams and cubic centimetres give g/cm³, where water is about 1; kilograms and cubic metres give kg/m³, where water is about 1000. If you expect a metal near 8 and see 8000, you mixed unit systems. Comparing the result with a known material is the quickest check. What material are you trying to identify?
