How it is calculated

The tool counts calendar days between today's date and the target date you enter. Both are taken at midnight, the difference in seconds is divided by 86,400 and rounded to a whole day, and the weeks figure is days / 7 to two decimals. A date in the future gives a positive count, today gives 0, and a date in the past gives a negative count, meaning days since. The date can be written in common date formats such as 2026-12-25 or 25 December 2026; unreadable text returns nothing. Today is not counted, so tomorrow is 1. Time of day and time zone are ignored apart from the server's own date.

Worked example

On 16 October 2026, count the days until 25 December 2026. Rest of October after the 16th: 15 days. November: 30 days. December up to the 25th: 25 days. Total = 15 + 30 + 25 = 70 days. In weeks, 70 / 7 = 10.00. Because the count starts from today, running it on another day gives another number.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the target day to be counted as well as today. The count is the difference, so today to tomorrow is 1.
  • Writing 03/04/2026 and not knowing whether it is read as March 4 or April 3; ISO form 2026-04-03 avoids the ambiguity.
  • Reading a negative number as an error. It means the date is already past.
  • Using it for working days. It counts all calendar days, including weekends and holidays.

This calculator counts the exact number of days remaining from today until a target date you enter, doing the calendar arithmetic — including leap years and varying month lengths — so you don't have to count on a calendar by hand. It answers a simple but surprisingly easy-to-miscalculate question: exactly how far away is that date, in days?

People use it to count down to a wedding, vacation, exam, product launch or deadline, and event planners and project managers use the same count to track how much runway is left before a fixed date. Because it's calculated from "today," the result automatically updates the count each time it's checked, unlike a fixed number written down once and left to go stale.

    The count excludes today, so tomorrow is 1. If you need an inclusive figure, such as the number of days you will be on a trip, add one yourself. It counts every calendar day, weekends and holidays included, so it is not a working-day count. With slashes the date is read month first, so 03/04/2026 means March 4; writing 2026-04-03 avoids any doubt. What are you counting down to?
