Data Transfer Time Calculator
Find the time to download or upload a file.
Result
How it is calculated
Transfer time is seconds = size × 8000 / speed. Size is in gigabytes (decimal, 1 GB = 1,000 MB) and speed is in megabits per second. One gigabyte is 8,000 megabits, which is where the 8000 comes from: a byte holds 8 bits. The result is shown in hours, minutes and seconds and also as the plain number of seconds. It is the ideal time at the full line speed. Protocol overhead, congestion, disk speed and limits at the server side make a real transfer slower. Both inputs must be above zero.
Worked example
A 50 GB file on a 200 Mbps connection. Convert size to megabits: 50 × 8000 = 400,000 Mb. Divide by speed: 400,000 / 200 = 2,000 seconds. That is 33 minutes and 20 seconds, shown as 33 m 20 s (2,000.00 s).
Common mistakes
- Mixing up megabits and megabytes. Providers sell speed in Mbps (bits), while files are in MB or GB (bytes), so 200 Mbps is only 25 MB per second.
- Entering the file size in MB. The field is in GB, so 500 MB is 0.5.
- Expecting to reach the full advertised speed. Wi-Fi, the sending server and the disk often limit it.
- Using the upload speed for a download, or the reverse. The two are often very different on home connections.
About this calculator
This calculator divides a file size by a connection speed to estimate transfer time, converting between bits and bytes along the way — since network speeds are usually quoted in megabits per second (Mbps) while file sizes are shown in megabytes (MB), a division by 8 sits at the heart of the math. The tool uses decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB = 8,000 megabits) and does not convert binary units such as MiB (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes), so enter the size in decimal gigabytes.
IT administrators sizing backup windows, network engineers planning bandwidth for video conferencing or cloud migrations, gamers estimating a large game-patch download, and anyone comparing ISP plans before buying use this to translate an advertised speed into a real wait time.

Your operating system may show file sizes in binary units, where 1 GiB is about 1.074 GB, so multiply that figure by 1.074 before entering it here to avoid underestimating the wait. For a backup window, treat the result as the best case and plan for noticeably longer, since sustained speed is rarely the advertised line rate. What are you moving, and over what kind of link?
