Crossword Grid Word Count Calculator
Enter the grid size and block density to estimate the word count.

How it is calculated
You enter the side length of a square grid and the percentage of squares that are black blocks. Cells: n². White cells: n² × (1 − density ÷ 100). In a fully checked grid every white cell sits in one across and one down entry, so the letters counted across all entries are 2 × white cells. The tool divides that by a fixed average entry length of 5 letters: words = round(2 × white cells ÷ 5). This counts across and down entries together. The result is an estimate, because a real grid with many long entries has fewer words than one with many short ones. Density must be at least 0 and below 100, and the grid size must be above 0. Anything else shows no result. The grid is always square, so a 15 × 21 grid cannot be modelled.
Worked example
A 15 × 15 grid with 17% black squares. Cells: 15 × 15 = 225. White cells: 225 × (1 − 0.17) = 186.75, shown as 187 cells. Letters counted over across and down entries: 2 × 186.75 = 373.5. Divide by the average entry length of 5: 373.5 ÷ 5 = 74.7, rounded to 75 words. A 21 × 21 grid at the same density has 366 white cells and gives 146 words. Treat the figure as a planning check on the block pattern, not the exact entry count of a finished puzzle.
Common mistakes
- Entering the density as a fraction, such as 0.17. The field is a percentage, so 17 is correct and 0.17 means almost no blocks.
- Entering the number of white squares instead of the black-square share. Density is the proportion of blocks.
- Typing the total cell count (225) as the grid size. The field takes the side length (15).
- Expecting the exact answer count of a real grid. The estimate assumes an average entry length of 5, so a grid full of 3-letter fill has more words than shown and one with long theme entries has fewer.
- Using it for a rectangular or heavily unchecked grid. The tool squares the one size you give and assumes every white cell is in both an across and a down entry.
About this calculator
The number of words (called "entries" or "answers") a crossword grid can hold depends on its size and the fraction of squares blocked out as black cells — fewer black blocks generally means longer, more numerous word runs, but American-style grids also require every white square to be part of both an across and a down word.
A standard 15×15 American daily grid, which by convention keeps roughly 16-17% of its 225 squares black under rules like those used by major outlets, typically lands in the 76–78 word range — a figure widely cited as a soft maximum in American crossword construction guidelines (in contrast, British-style "blocked" grids commonly run leaner, with less internal connectivity).
This calculator estimates word count from grid size and block density using that same relationship, giving constructors a quick sanity check before finalizing a grid's black-square pattern.

The estimate assumes every white square is checked, meaning it sits in both an across and a down entry, as in American grids. A fully open 5 × 5 grid with no blocks returns 10 words, which is exactly right, while a 15 × 15 at 16 percent blocks gives 76 words across 189 white cells. British-style grids leave alternate squares unchecked, so expect fewer entries than shown. How does your own block pattern compare with the figure?
