How it is calculated
Enter a five-field cron expression (minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week) and a start time as YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM. Each field takes *, a number, a range such as 1-5, a step such as */15 or 10-30/5, or a comma list. Ranges are minute 0-59, hour 0-23, day 1-31, month 1-12 and weekday 0-7 where both 0 and 7 mean Sunday. Names like MON or JAN and shortcuts like @daily are not accepted. A start such as 5/10 means 5-59 in steps of 10. The tool steps forward minute by minute from the start (the start minute itself is skipped) and returns the first match. If both day-of-month and weekday are restricted, either one matching is enough. It searches 366 days ahead and shows no result beyond that.
Worked example
The expression is 0 9 15 * 1 and the start is 2026-10-20 10:00. This means 09:00 on the 15th of any month, or on any Monday, because both day fields are restricted and either may match. The 15th of October has already passed, and the next 15th is November 15. The first Monday after the start is October 26. The earliest match is therefore 2026-10-26 09:00. That is 5 days and 23 hours later, which the tool reports as 8,580 min.
Common mistakes
- Reading "0 9 15 * 1" as "09:00 on the 15th only if it is a Monday". When both the day-of-month and the weekday are set, cron runs when either matches, so this job also runs every Monday.
- Using names for weekdays and months. This tool takes numbers only (0 or 7 for Sunday, 1-12 for months); "MON" or "JAN" returns no result, and so does a shortcut such as @daily.
- Entering the start date without a time, or with a T between date and time. The format must be exactly
2026-10-20 10:00. - Expecting a timezone. The time is plain local time as typed, so your server's timezone or a daylight-saving change can shift the real run; check where the scheduler runs.
- Asking for a rare date such as 29 February from a non-leap year. The tool looks only 366 days ahead, so a date further away gives no result even though the expression is valid.
About this calculator
A cron expression is a compact 5-field schedule format — minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week — used by the Unix/Linux cron daemon, and by extension by CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions and Jenkins, and by Kubernetes CronJobs. Each field accepts a wildcard (* for “every value”), a single number, a range like 1-5, a step like */15, or a comma list like 1,15,30.
Finding the next run means walking forward from a start time and testing each candidate minute against all five fields at once. One quirk carried over from Vixie cron is that when both day-of-month and day-of-week are restricted (not *), a match on either field is enough — they are combined with OR, not AND. This calculator parses the expression, applies that rule, and reports the next fire time along with the minutes remaining until it runs.
