CPM Goal Calculator

Work out the CPM you can afford to pay and still hit your target CPA.

How it is calculated

The tool works backward from the number of customers you want. clicks = conversions / (conversion rate % / 100), impressions = clicks / (CTR % / 100), budget = conversions × target CPA and required CPM = budget / impressions × 1000. CTR is the share of impressions that get a click, conversion rate the share of clicks that convert, and CPA is in dollars per conversion. CPM is cost per 1,000 impressions, so it is the most you can pay for impressions while still landing on the target CPA. The required CPM equals CPA × CTR × conversion rate × 10 with both rates in percent, so it does not depend on how many conversions you want. Rates must be above 0 and at most 100, otherwise no result is shown.

Worked example

Goal: 100 conversions at a target CPA of 20, with a 4 % conversion rate and a 1.5 % CTR. Step 1: clicks = 100 / 0.04 = 2,500. Step 2: impressions = 2,500 / 0.015 = 166,667. Step 3: budget = 100 × 20 = $2,000.00. Step 4: CPM = 2,000 / 166,667 × 1000 = $12.00. So you can pay at most $12.00 per thousand impressions; a higher CPM pushes the CPA above 20.

Common mistakes

  • Entering CTR or conversion rate as a fraction (0.015 or 0.04). Both fields are percentages, so 0.015 means 0.015 %.
  • Using the conversion rate per impression or per session instead of per click. The formula chains impressions to clicks with CTR first, then clicks to conversions.
  • Treating the result as the price to bid. It is a ceiling: bidding at exactly this CPM only reaches the target if CTR and conversion rate come in as assumed.
  • Taking CTR and conversion rate from a different campaign or audience. A small drop in either rate lowers the CPM you can afford proportionally.
  • Expecting the CPM to change when you change the conversion target. It stays the same; only impressions, clicks and budget scale.

About this calculator

The CPM goal calculator works backward from a target cost per acquisition (CPA) to find the maximum cost per thousand impressions (CPM) a media buyer can afford to pay and still hit that CPA. Because CPA depends on how many impressions turn into clicks (click-through rate) and how many clicks turn into conversions (conversion rate), the affordable CPM is: target CPA × CTR × conversion rate × 1000.

Performance marketers and media buyers use this calculation before setting bid caps in ad platforms like Google Ads, Meta or programmatic exchanges, because bidding above the affordable CPM guarantees the campaign misses its CPA target even if every other assumption holds. It also shows the required impression volume and budget for a given number of target conversions, which is essential for planning campaign spend ahead of launch.

Work back from the cost per acquisition you can afford: with your expected CTR and conversion rate it shows the highest CPM you can pay, the impressions you need and the budget to reach the goal.
