Commute Cost Calculator

Enter your commute distance and per-mile cost to see your yearly cost.

How it is calculated

The tool chains three multiplications: daily = round-trip miles × cost per mile, weekly = daily × days per week and yearly = weekly × 50. Distance is the full round trip in miles, cost per mile is in dollars, and days per week is the number of days you actually travel. The year is fixed at 50 working weeks, so about two weeks of leave are assumed; the tool does not ask for holidays or sick days. All three inputs must be above zero. The cost per mile is whatever figure you supply, so it only covers the items you decide to include, such as fuel, wear, parking or fares.

Worked example

You drive 24 miles round trip, estimate 0.50 per mile and go to the office 4 days a week. Daily cost: 24 × 0.50 = 12. Weekly: 12 × 4 = 48, shown as $48.00. Yearly: 48 × 50 = 2400, so the yearly commute cost is $2,400.00. At 5 days a week the same trip would cost $3,000 a year.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the one-way distance. The field is the round trip, so a 12-mile drive each way is 24.
  • Counting fuel only. Insurance, maintenance, tyres, depreciation and parking also grow with miles driven; fold them into the cost per mile.
  • Entering the distance in kilometres. The field is in miles, so convert first (1 mile is about 1.609 km).
  • Using the days you could commute rather than the days you do. Remote or hybrid days should not be counted.
  • Expecting holidays to be subtracted. The yearly figure always assumes 50 weeks.

About this calculator

The cost of commuting is easy to underestimate because it's paid out in small daily increments rather than one visible lump sum — a per-mile cost that feels trivial on a single trip adds up dramatically once multiplied across every workday of the year. Calculating it properly means scaling a round-trip distance and per-mile cost up through daily, weekly, and annual multipliers based on how many days a week the commute happens.

This calculator does exactly that: it takes your round-trip distance, cost per mile, and commuting days per week, and projects your commuting cost at the daily, weekly, and yearly level. It's a practical tool for anyone comparing job offers in different locations, deciding whether to move closer to work, or weighing the true cost of a longer commute against the reasons for taking it — a bigger house, a better school district, or a lower rent.
