How it is calculated

Seed is sold and sown by weight per 1,000 square feet, so the calculation is seed_lb = area ÷ 1000 × rate and seed_oz = seed_lb × 16. area is the lawn size in square feet and rate is the seeding rate in pounds per 1,000 sq ft, which you take from the seed packet for the clover you are using. If the rate field is left empty, the tool falls back to 0.25 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Area and rate must both be above zero. Results are shown to two decimals in pounds and ounces. The calculation counts only the area you enter, so measure the actual seeded area, not the whole yard, and remember it gives the amount of seed, not the number of bags.

Worked example

A lawn of 3,200 sq ft is overseeded at 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Step 1: the area in thousands is 3,200 ÷ 1,000 = 3.2. Step 2: seed needed = 3.2 × 0.5 = 1.60 lb. Step 3: in ounces, 1.60 × 16 = 25.60 oz. The tool also repeats the area as 3,200 sq ft. With the default rate of 0.25 the same lawn would need half as much, 0.80 lb, so the rate you choose matters more than the area.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the area in square metres. The field is in square feet; multiply square metres by 10.764 first.
  • Entering a rate per acre or per square metre. The rate is pounds per 1,000 square feet, as seed labels commonly state it.
  • Leaving the default 0.25 for every type. The rate depends on the clover, on whether you are overseeding an existing lawn or sowing it alone, and on the label, so use the packet's figure.
  • Including house, beds and paths in the area. Use only the lawn that will be seeded.
  • Ignoring seed quality and coating. Coated seed weighs more per seed, so follow the coated-seed rate on the label rather than reusing an uncoated one.

About this calculator

Clover seed is sown by weight per unit area, but the right rate differs by type: micro clover, bred to stay short and blend into an existing lawn, is typically overseeded at a much lower rate than white clover grown as a standalone low-maintenance, nitrogen-fixing groundcover. This calculator multiplies your lawn's area by the chosen seeding rate to estimate the pounds of seed needed to cover it.

Clover lawns have grown popular with homeowners seeking a drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly, low-mow alternative to a pure grass lawn, since clover fixes its own nitrogen from the air and needs less fertilizer and irrigation — getting the seeding rate right avoids both patchy, thin coverage from under-seeding and wasted seed from over-seeding.

Area goes in as square feet, so multiply square metres by 10.76 first. The rate is pounds per 1,000 square feet, and 0.25 is only the starting value, so check your seed packet, since overseeding into turf and sowing bare soil are often given different rates. The result is seed alone: any sand you mix in for even spreading is extra. What are you sowing into?
