Turkey City Distance Calculator
How far apart are two cities?
Result
How it is calculated
The tool measures the straight-line (great-circle) distance between the coordinates of two Turkish provinces using the haversine formula: a = sin²(Δφ/2) + cos φ₁ · cos φ₂ · sin²(Δλ/2), then d = 2R · atan2(√a, √(1−a)). φ is latitude, λ is longitude, Δ is the difference between the two cities, and R = 6,371 km is the mean radius of the Earth. The distance in miles is km ÷ 1.609344. Both values are rounded to whole numbers. Because the points are fixed province coordinates and the path is a straight line over the Earth's surface, the figure is shorter than any driving route and differs from road distance signs.
Worked example
Ankara to İstanbul. The tool takes the stored latitude and longitude of each province, converts the differences to radians, and applies the haversine formula with R = 6,371 km. The great-circle distance comes to 350 km. Dividing by 1.609344 gives 217 miles. By road the trip is noticeably longer because highways follow valleys and bypass cities rather than a straight line.
Common mistakes
- Using the result as the driving distance. It is the shortest line over the Earth's surface; roads are longer.
- Expecting an exact match with a map app. The tool uses a single reference point per province, not the city centre you may have in mind.
- Choosing the same province for both cities and expecting the distance between districts: the result is 0.
- Estimating fuel or travel time from the straight-line value without adding a margin for the real route.

About this calculator
This calculator finds the great-circle distance between any two Turkish provinces using the haversine formula, which accounts for the Earth's curvature to give the true straight-line (“as the crow flies”) distance — not the longer route you'd actually drive.
Travelers use it to get a rough sense of how far apart two cities really are, and it's handy for logistics and route planning where straight-line distance is a useful first estimate before checking actual road distance.

This is the straight line over the earth's surface, not the road distance, so it is a lower bound for any drive and can be far short on winding or mountain routes. Each province is represented by a single coordinate, which makes distances between neighbouring provinces rough. Kilometres are rounded to a whole number. Which routes would you like to see with road distances?
