Circle Equation Calculator
Build the equation from center and radius.

How it is calculated
For a centre (h, k) and radius r the tool writes the centre-radius form (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r², plus A = π·r² and C = 2·π·r. A positive centre coordinate is written as (x - h) and a negative one as (x + |h|), so the sign is flipped for you; a coordinate of 0 collapses that term to x² or y². Decimal centres and radii are printed with the decimals they need (up to 4, trailing zeros dropped), so a radius of 2.5 gives r² = 6.25, not 6 or 7. Area and circumference always show 4 decimals. The radius must be above zero; 0, a negative radius or an empty box gives no result.
Worked example
A circle has centre (3, −2) and radius 5. For x, h = 3 is positive, so the term is (x - 3)². For y, k = −2 is negative, so the term is (y + 2)². The right side is r² = 5 × 5 = 25. The equation reads (x - 3)² + (y + 2)² = 25. Area = π × 25 ≈ 78.5398 and circumference = 2 × π × 5 ≈ 31.4159. Check: the point (8, −2) is 5 units right of the centre, and (8 − 3)² + 0 = 25, so it lies on the circle.
Common mistakes
- Copying the centre signs straight into the equation. A centre at y = −2 gives (y + 2)², not (y − 2)², because the equation subtracts the centre value.
- Entering the diameter instead of the radius. A circle of width 10 has r = 5, so the right side is 25, not 100.
- Reading the right-hand number as the radius. The 25 in the result is r², the radius squared; the radius is 5.
- Entering a radius of 0 expecting a single point. The radius must be above zero, so nothing is shown.
- Entering a general-form equation's coefficients as the centre. For x² + y² − 6x + 4y − 12 = 0 the centre is (3, −2), half of each linear coefficient with the sign flipped, not (−6, 4).
About this calculator
Every circle in the coordinate plane can be written in standard form as (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r², where (h, k) is the center and r is the radius. This equation comes directly from the distance formula: any point (x, y) on the circle sits exactly r units from the center, and squaring that distance relationship removes the square root to give a clean algebraic equation.
Writing a circle this way is a core skill in analytic geometry courses, but it also has real applications: architects and CAD designers use it to define circular arcs and fillets precisely, GIS and mapping software uses circle equations to define radius-based search zones or no-fly zones, and physics students use it to describe circular motion paths. The same form also generalizes directly to spheres in 3D (adding a z-term), which is why it's a stepping stone toward more advanced conic-section and surface work.
The equation appears in centre-radius form rather than expanded, with the area πr² and circumference 2πr shown alongside.
