Cholesterol (mg/dL) to Millimoles per litre Converter
Enter a value in cholesterol (mg/dl) to convert it to millimoles per litre.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool multiplies the value in milligrams per decilitre by a fixed factor: mmol/L = mg/dL × 0.0258598. The factor comes from cholesterol's molar mass: 1 mg/dL is 10 mg per litre, and dividing by about 386.7 g/mol gives 0.02586 mmol/L. The result is rounded to two decimals, so a small rounding difference from a lab report is normal. It converts one number at a time and does not distinguish total, LDL or HDL cholesterol; the same factor applies to all. The tool does not check the value for a reasonable range and does not interpret it. Other blood measurements, such as triglycerides or glucose, have different molar masses and need their own factors.
Worked example
A lab reports a cholesterol value of 190 mg/dL. Multiply by the factor: 190 × 0.0258598 = 4.9134. Rounded to two decimals the result is 4.91 mmol/L. To go back the other way, divide by 0.0258598 (or multiply by about 38.67), which returns roughly 190 mg/dL. This only changes the unit and says nothing about whether the value is healthy.
Common mistakes
- Using this factor for triglycerides or glucose. Their molar masses differ, so cholesterol's 0.0259 would give a wrong mmol/L figure.
- Entering a value already in mmol/L. A reading such as 5.2 would be treated as 5.2 mg/dL and come out near 0.13 mmol/L.
- Dividing instead of multiplying. Going from mg/dL to mmol/L multiplies by 0.0259; dividing is the reverse direction.
- Comparing a converted number against a target written for the other unit without converting the target too. Reference limits differ numerically between the two systems.
- Treating the output as medical advice. It is only a unit conversion, and results should be interpreted by a clinician.

About this calculator
Blood cholesterol is reported in milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL) in the US and a handful of other countries, but in millimoles per litre (mmol/L) almost everywhere else. The conversion depends on cholesterol's molar mass (386.65 g/mol): mmol/L = mg/dL × 0.02586 (equivalently, mg/dL = mmol/L × 38.67) — the same 0.0259 factor used for LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol since they're all reported on the same molecular basis.
Patients and physicians reading lab results from a different country's system, researchers combining international clinical trial data, and medical professionals relocating between US and international healthcare settings all need this conversion — a total cholesterol of 200 mg/dL, often cited as a screening threshold, corresponds to about 5.2 mmol/L.

This factor is for cholesterol only, total, LDL or HDL. Triglycerides use a different one, about 0.0113 per mg/dL, so running a triglyceride result through this page gives a wrong number. Because labs round their own figures, a small difference from the printed mmol/L value is normal. Ask your doctor what target applies to you. Which other lab values, such as glucose or triglycerides, would you like converted?
