Discover your Chinese zodiac animal, element and polarity from your birth year.

How it is calculated

The tool works from the calendar year you enter (1900 or later). The animal follows the 12-year cycle: index = (year − 4) mod 12, with 0 = Rat, 1 = Ox, 2 = Tiger and so on to 11 = Pig. The element comes from the last digit of the year: 0-1 Metal, 2-3 Water, 4-5 Wood, 6-7 Fire, 8-9 Earth. Polarity is Yang for even years and Yin for odd years.

Important limit: the Chinese new year falls in January or February and moves from year to year, but this tool uses only the Gregorian year. If you were born in January or early February, check the date of that year's lunar new year, because you may belong to the previous year's animal. Years before 1900 give no result.

Worked example

Year 1988. Index = (1988 − 4) mod 12 = 1984 mod 12 = 4, which is the fifth animal, the Dragon. Last digit 8 gives Earth. 1988 is even, so the polarity is Yang. The tool shows Dragon, Earth, Yang.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring the lunar new year for people born in January or February; the tool uses only the calendar year.
  • Confusing the zodiac animal with the element: the animal repeats every 12 years, while the element pattern follows the last digit of the year.
  • Entering the age instead of the birth year.
  • Expecting a result for years before 1900, which the tool does not cover.

This calculator finds your Chinese zodiac animal from your birth year using the traditional 12-year cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig), plus your governing element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) from a 10-year cycle, and your yin or yang polarity.

People use it out of curiosity around Lunar New Year, when horoscope and compatibility articles reference zodiac pairings, and it's a common reference for naming years in East Asian culture and astrology — 2026, for instance, is a Fire Horse year. The calculator uses the calendar year only, not the exact Lunar New Year date, so if you were born in January or early February, check the date of that year's Lunar New Year, because you may belong to the previous year's animal.

    The animal is worked out from the calendar year alone. The Chinese year actually starts on the lunar new year, which falls between about 21 January and 20 February, so anyone born in January or early February may belong to the previous animal. For those births, check the new year date for that year before trusting the result. The element and polarity follow the same year rule. Born in that window? Tell us which animal you were told.
