Canning Headspace Calculator
Enter the jar capacity, its inner diameter and the headspace your recipe requires to see the exact fill volume for each jar.

How it is calculated
The headspace is treated as a cylinder as wide as the jar at the fill line. headspace volume = π × (d / 2)² × (h / 10), where d is the inner diameter in cm and h is the headspace in mm (divided by 10 to get cm). One cubic centimetre equals one millilitre, so the result is directly in ml. fill volume = jar volume − headspace volume, and the fill percentage is fill / jar volume × 100. The jar volume is the capacity to the rim in ml. The calculator gives no result if the jar volume or diameter is zero or negative, if the headspace is negative, or if the headspace cylinder would be as large as the whole jar. A headspace of 0 is accepted and returns a 100% fill. The required headspace itself depends on the recipe and the processing method, so take it from your tested recipe.
Worked example
A 500 ml jar has an inner diameter of 7 cm and the recipe asks for 13 mm of headspace. The radius is 3.5 cm and 13 mm is 1.3 cm. Headspace volume = π × 3.5² × 1.3 ≈ 50 ml, shown as 50.0. Fill volume = 500 − 50 = 450.0 ml, which is 89.99% of the jar. So you pack about 450 ml of food and leave the rest as air space under the lid.
Common mistakes
- Entering the headspace in centimetres or inches. The field is in millimetres: ½ inch is about 13 mm, not 0.5 or 1.3.
- Entering the volume up to the marked fill line as the jar volume. The field expects the full capacity to the rim.
- Measuring the outside of the glass. Use the inner diameter at the fill line, because glass walls are several millimetres thick and the outer figure overstates the volume.
- Taking the fill volume as the amount of raw food. Food that is packed tightly or shrinks during processing is a separate matter: the result is only the volume available in the jar.
- Applying one headspace to every recipe. Jams, pickles and low-acid foods use different values, so change the field for each recipe.
About this calculator
Headspace — the empty gap left between the top of the food and the jar lid — is not wasted space in home canning; it’s a safety requirement, because that air pocket is what gets driven out as steam during processing to form the vacuum seal that keeps the jar shelf-stable. The USDA’s canning guidelines specify exact headspace by food type: roughly ¼ inch for jams and jellies, ½ inch for most fruits and pickles, and a full inch for low-acid foods like vegetables and meats that need pressure canning, because these denser, less-acidic foods expand more during processing.
Home canners use headspace math to know exactly how much food to pack into each jar — too little headspace and food can boil over during processing, breaking the seal; too much and there isn’t enough vacuum to seal properly. Getting it right for a jar’s specific inner diameter, not just its labeled capacity, is what determines the true usable fill volume.
