Calorie Burn From Steps Calculator
Enter your step count and body weight to estimate calories burned.

How it is calculated
The estimate is a single multiplication: kcal = steps × body weight (kg) × 0.0005. The factor 0.0005 kcal per step per kilogram means 0.5 kcal per kg for every 1,000 steps. The calculation uses no height, stride length, speed or slope: every step counts the same. The factor is 3 METs (moderate walking at about 100 steps a minute) × 1 kcal per kg per hour ÷ 6,000 steps an hour. Weight must be in kilograms. The total is rounded to whole kilocalories, and a second figure shows the burn for each 1,000 steps at your weight (1000 × kg × 0.0005). It is a population-style rule of thumb for level walking, not a measurement of your own metabolism. Both inputs must be above zero.
Worked example
You walk 8,000 steps and weigh 70 kg. Calories: 8,000 × 70 × 0.0005 = 280 kcal. Burn per 1,000 steps: 1,000 × 70 × 0.0005 = 35.00 kcal. At 82.5 kg, 10,000 steps would give 10,000 × 82.5 × 0.0005 = 412.5, shown as 413 kcal, showing that a heavier person burns more for the same step count.
Common mistakes
- Entering body weight in pounds. The field is in kilograms, so 154 lb entered as 154 would overstate the result by more than double.
- Treating the figure as extra calories on top of normal activity. Part of this energy would be spent anyway by simply being awake, so the net gain from walking is smaller.
- Expecting speed, hills or stride length to change the result. They do not enter the formula; only steps and weight do.
- Entering steps from several days at once. The calories scale with the count, so a weekly total gives a weekly figure, not a daily one.
- Using the number to justify eating back all the calories. The estimate has a wide margin of error and is not a measured value.

About this calculator
This calculator estimates energy expenditure directly from your step count and body weight: it applies a fixed 0.0005 kcal per step for every kilogram of body weight. The factor comes from the MET value of moderate walking: walking at about 100 steps a minute is about 3 METs (the CADENCE-adults study), and 1 MET is about 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour (Compendium of Physical Activities), so an hour of 6,000 steps burns about 3 kcal per kg, or 0.0005 kcal per kg per step. It does not use your height, stride length or pace. The figure is the gross cost of walking: it includes the resting metabolism of about 1 MET that you would burn anyway, so the extra energy from the steps is about two thirds of it.
Because the estimate scales with body mass, a heavier person burns more calories for the same step count than a lighter one, which matches how fitness trackers and pedometer apps report calorie burn. This makes it useful for anyone using a daily step goal (like 10,000 steps) to gauge rough energy expenditure for weight management, without needing a heart-rate monitor or lab-grade metabolic testing.

Only your weight and the step count enter the formula, so it is easiest to use for comparing your own days. At 10,000 steps the tool gives 300 kcal for someone at 60 kg and 450 kcal at 90 kg. A heavier walker scales up in a straight line. Treat the figure as a rough guide, not something to eat back, and compare trends over weeks rather than single days. What step goal are you working towards?
