How it is calculated
Enter a Gregorian date as YYYY-MM-DD. The year rule is Bengali year = Gregorian year − 593 on or after 14 April and Gregorian year − 594 before it, because 14 April is treated as Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh). The month name comes from a fixed table that follows the revised Bangladesh calendar: each Bengali month starts on one set Gregorian day (for example Boishakh on 14 April, Kartik on 16 October, Poush on 15 December, Magh on 14 January). A date before that day still belongs to the month that began in the previous Gregorian month. Impossible dates such as 30 February, and dates not written as year-month-day, give no result. The West Bengal calendar is astronomical and can differ by a day or so.
Worked example
Convert 2026-10-19. Step 1: 19 October is after 14 April, so the year is 2026 − 593 = 1433. Step 2: in October the month starts on the 16th, and 19 is on or after it, so the month is Kartik. The tool prints Kartik 1433 BS and a year line of 1433 BS. Try 2026-10-15 instead: that is before the 16th, so the month is still Ashwin (Ashwin 1433 BS). Try 2026-04-13 and the year drops to 2026 − 594 = 1432, in the month Chaitra.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting a flat 593 years from every date. Dates from 1 January to 13 April need 594, so the Bengali year changes in April, not January.
- Assuming the Bengali month begins on the 1st of the Gregorian month. Months here start on the 13th to 16th, so 15 October is still Ashwin and 16 October is Kartik.
- Using the result for West Bengal religious or festival dates. The tool follows the revised Bangladesh calendar with fixed start days, while the West Bengal calendar can place a boundary a day away.
- Typing the date as DD-MM-YYYY. The tool expects the year first,
YYYY-MM-DD. - Expecting a reverse conversion. It only goes from a Gregorian date to Bengali San.
About this calculator
The Bengali calendar (Bangabda, abbreviated BS) is a solar calendar traditionally used in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal for cultural, agricultural and, in Bangladesh, official purposes alongside the Gregorian calendar. Its year count runs roughly 593–594 years behind the Gregorian year, and its New Year — Pohela Boishakh — falls around April 14 each Gregorian year, unlike the Gregorian January 1 start, because the Bengali year begins with the solar month of Boishakh rather than a fixed civil date.
Converting between the two systems is therefore not a simple year subtraction: the Bengali year only advances at mid-April, so a Gregorian date in January–mid-April maps to the tail end of the previous Bengali year, while a date from mid-April onward maps to the current one, with the Bengali month also shifting accordingly. This calculator applies that approximate offset and month mapping to a Gregorian date so you can see the corresponding Bengali San year and month, used for holidays, harvest festivals and traditional record-keeping.

The converter uses fixed month start days, so it follows the revised Bangladesh calendar, not the traditional Indian one used in West Bengal. 2026-04-13 comes out as Chaitra of year 1432, and the next day, 2026-04-14, is Boishakh of 1433, the new year. If a festival date matters to you, check it against an official almanac for your region. Which Bengali calendar do you need to match?
